TECHNIQUE

  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 beach ball per 2 students
1 net

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Pac-Man. In this game, the objective is to serve using a topspin to hit all the ghosts moving through the arcade.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select one Pac-Man (server).
  • The rest of you will be ghosts.
  • Before the game begins, ghosts must line up single file along the end line.
  • When I say, “GO!” the ghost furthest to the right will lead the others down a zigzag pattern moving closer to the net.
  • Ghosts can only walk and cannot go out of the line.
  • If the Pac-Man serves a ball and it hits a ghost, the ghost becomes a Pac-Man and joins the other side.
  • We will begin a new game once all ghosts have become a Pac-Man.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the amount of Pac-Men.
Game 3: Decrease the size of the court and allow ghosts to walk in any pattern.
Exit Ticket: Students topspin serve to the teacher to put the equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • If serving is too difficult, have students move closer to the net.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • What is one thing you found most challenging about putting topspin on the ball?
    • What is one thing you plan to improve in order to serve more accurately?

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select one student to begin as the ameba.
  • The amebas will start on one side of the net and lay down on their stomachs.
  • Everyone else will stand on the opposing side ready to topspin serve.
  • When I say, “GO!” serve the ball over the net trying to hit an ameba.
  • If your ball hits the ameba, go over to the other side and connect to it by holding hands or linking arms.
  • If your ball does not hit the ameba, retrieve your ball and try again.
  • The ameba must remain laying on the ground, but can move their arms and legs.
  • We will begin a new game when everyone is part of the ameba.
