Objective: Setter attack

Volleyball Unit | Level 33

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to setter attack.

IMPORTANCE
The setter attack is important because it is an effective offensive tactic. The setter attack uses speed and deception to make the opposing team think that the ball will be set.

VOCABULARY
Set:
a passing move in volleyball using fingers (typically the second touch after the ball comes over).

When serving using a setter attack, it is important to:

1. Position yourself directly under the ball in the ready position (feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, slight forward lean).

2. Extend your arms above your forehead and make a triangle with your hands (hands do not touch).

3. Rather than setting the ball, use an elbow-to-wrist motion to hit the ball over the net.

4. Straighten your arms and legs as you push the ball upwards and towards your target.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into pairs. Ro Sham Bo with your partner who will toss the ball and who will set the ball. When I say, "GO!" toss the ball to your partner who will demonstrate a setter attack. Switch after three setter attacks.

SWITCH-A-ROO

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
8-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 beach ball
1 net
Optional: 1 volleyball

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing a Switch-A-Roo. In this game, the objective is to setter attack and help your team make as many points as possible.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • There can only be six teammates on the court at a time. Remaining teammates will sit on the sidelines.
  • You are not allowed to touch the net.
  • Once the ball is served over the net, each team gets to hit the ball up to three times only.
  • The same student cannot hit the ball twice in a row.
  • The ball cannot be “carried” or “lifted”.
  • Once a teammate has hit the ball, he/she must exit the court and sit on the sideline and a teammate will take his/her place.
  • If a teammate serves or hits the ball out-of-bounds, he/she cannot rotate out and the other team then gets to serve.
  • The game continues until there is one student left on either side.
  • A point is awarded to the first team that gets all their team members to hit the ball.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Keep score. The first team to earn 11 points wins
Variation: To increase difficulty, use a volleyball instead of a beach ball.
Exit Ticket: In partners, one student hits the ball and the other demonstrates a setter attack over the net. Students switch positions before putting their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Depending on class size, allow more or less students to be on the court at a time.
    • Make the court smaller based on students’ athletic ability.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • What is one advantage a setting attack gives your team?
    • What did you find most challenging about a setter attack?

FOOSBALL VOLLEYBALL V

TIME
20-30 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
9-18 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 volleyball
30 short cones
1 net

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Foosball Volleyball V. In this game, the objective is to work with your team to setter attack and hit the ball over the net while staying in your designated zone.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • When I say, “GO!” one team will serve the ball first.
  • All GrowFit volleyball rules apply.
  • Everyone must stay in their designated zone until teams rotate for serving.
  • After everyone has served in the back zone once, then the back zone will move to the front zone. The front zone will then move to the middle zone and the middle zone will move to the back.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Do not keep score.
Game 2: Keep score. First team to earn 11 points wins.
Variation: To decrease difficulty, use beach balls instead of volley balls.
Exit Ticket: In partners, one student hits the ball and the other demonstrates a setter attack over the net. Students switch positions before putting their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.

  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:

SCRIMMAGE

TIME
20-30 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
12-20 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 volleyball
1 net

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing a Scrimmage. In this game, the objective is to setter attack and score the most points.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • You are not allowed to touch the net.
  • Once the ball is served over the net, each team gets to hit the ball up to three times only.
  • The same student cannot hit the ball twice in a row.
  • Servers rotate in a clockwise position.
  • The ball cannot be “carried” or “lifted”.
  • If the ball is served and goes outside the boundary lines, it is the other team’s point. If the ball touches the line, it is considered “in” bounds.
  • We will keep rally scoring – a point is awarded on every serve.
  • After each game, we will switch sides.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Teams will play the best 2 out of 3 games (the first two games are played to 25 points and if necessary, the third game is played to 15 points) – depending on class time.
Exit Ticket: In partners, one student hits the ball and the other demonstrates a setter attack over the net. Students switch positions before putting their equipment away.

    • Allow a one bounce rule if volleying the ball is too difficult.
  • ELL Accommodation:
