ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Objective: Serve using an overhand pattern over a net

Volleyball Unit | Level 26

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to serve using an overhand pattern over a net.

IMPORTANCE
Serving using an overhand pattern over a net is important because it is how each play begins. Overhand serving gives the ball more power and force when hitting over the net.

VOCABULARY
Serve:
the first hit to begin play.
Palm of the hand: the part of the hand between the bases of the fingers and the wrist.
Striking arm: arm that has the hand that contacts the ball.

When serving using an overhand pattern over a net, it is important to:

1. Face your target with your opposite foot forward.

2.png

2. Hold the ball in the palm of your opposite hand at shoulder level.

3.png

3. Toss the ball straight up, slightly above the height of your head.

4.png

4. Step with your front foot and hit the ball with the heel of your palm.

5. Follow through with your striking arm.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide students into teams of two. One team will line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder with a ball and the other team will line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the midline. When I say, "GO!" serve the ball aiming towards the midline. After everyone serves, the opposing team will retrieve a ball and serve from the midline.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

PAC-MAN

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 beach ball per 2 students
1 net

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Pac-Man. In this game, the objective is to serve using an overhand pattern over a net and hit all the ghosts moving through the arcade.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select one Pac-Man (server).
  • The rest of you will be ghosts.
  • Before the game begins, ghosts must line up single file along the end line.
  • When I say, “GO!” the ghost furthest to the right will lead the others down a zigzag pattern moving closer to the net.
  • Ghosts can only walk and cannot go out of the line.
  • If the Pac-Man serves a ball and it hits a ghost, the ghost becomes a Pac-Man and joins the other side.
  • We will begin a new game once all ghosts become a Pac-Man.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the amount of Pac-Mans.
Game 3: Decrease the size of the court and allow ghosts to walk in any pattern.
Exit Ticket: Students overhand serve the ball over the net for the teacher to catch and put equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • If serving is too difficult, have students move closer to the net.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • What is the most difficult part of serving overhand?
    • What goal will you set in order to improve your overhand serve?

BREAKOUT III

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 volleyball per student
1 net
Optional: 1 beach ball per 2 students
Optional: 5 short cones

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Breakout III. In this game, the objective is to serve using an overhand pattern over a net and free the other prisoners that are held in the prison (behind the end line).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select two escapees and one prison guard.
  • The rest of the class will be prisoners.
  • Before the game begins, prisoners must line up in the prison.
  • When I say, “GO!” the escapees will overhand serve the ball to the prisoners.
  • The prison guards will try and block the serves.
  • Prison guards cannot go into the prison.
  • When a prisoner catches a ball, he/she can join the escapees.
  • We will begin a new game once all the prisoners have been freed.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the amount of prison guards and/or escapees.
Game 3: To increase difficulty, have prisoners kneel or crouch like a frog instead of stand.
Variation: If serving over the net is too difficult, consider using short cones instead.

SWITCH-A-ROO II

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
8-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 beach ball
1 net
Optional: 1 volleyball

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing a Switch-A-Roo II. In this game, the objective is to serve using an overhand pattern over a net to help your team earn as many points as possible.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • There can only be six teammates on the court at a time. Remaining teammates will sit on the sidelines.
  • You are not allowed to touch the net.
  • Once the ball is served over the net, each team gets to hit the ball up to three times only.
  • The same student cannot hit the ball twice in a row.
  • The ball cannot be “carried” or “lifted”.
  • Once a teammate has hit the ball, he/she must exit the court and sit on the sideline and a teammate will take his/her place.
  • If a teammate serves or hits the ball out-of-bounds, he/she cannot rotate out and the other team then gets to serve.
  • The game continues until there is one student left on either side.
  • A point is awarded to the first team that gets all their team members to hit the ball.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Keep score. The first team to earn 11 points wins.
Variation: To increase difficulty, use a volleyball instead of a beach ball.
Exit Ticket: Students overhand serve the ball over the net for the teacher to catch and put equipment away.

    • Depending on class size, allow more or less students to be on the court at a time.
    • Make the court smaller based on students’ athletic ability.
