TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to bump a served ball over the net.
IMPORTANCE
Bumping a served ball over the net is important because it is a quick strategy to transition from receiving (defense) to hitting (offense).
VOCABULARY
Bump: a passing move in volleyball (typically the first touch when the ball comes over).
When bumping a served ball over the net, it is important to:
1. Get in the ready position (feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, slight forward lean).
2. Position yourself under the ball.
3. Create a platform with your arms (place one hand on top of the other and bring your thumbs together).
4. Keep your elbows in.
5. Make contact with the ball on your forearms (not hands).
6. Use your legs to provide power, not your arms.
PRACTICE
- I will divide students into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will go first. Spread out onto the field and stand 3 – 5 feet away from your partner. When I say, "GO!" one teammate will serve the ball and the other will bump it back. After you have made five bumps, switch roles.
- Repeat as many times as needed.
FORTRESS II
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game
EQUIPMENT
1 volleyball per student
6 hula-hoops
1 net
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Fortress II. In this game, the objective is to bump a served ball over the fortress (net).
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will select one person to start off as the server.
- The rest of the class will stand in any of the six hula-hoops on the court.
- Any remaining students will stand on the sidelines.
- When I say, “GO!” the server will start serving balls over the fortress trying to aim for any of the hula-hoops.
- If a student inside the hula-hoop makes a bump over the net, he/she joins the server and a student on the sideline will take his/her place.
- You must make a bump with at least one foot inside the hula-hoop for it to count.
- We will begin a new game when all students become servers.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. Increase the number of throwers if necessary.
Game 2: Change location of the hula-hoops to increase difficulty.
Exit Ticket: Teacher serves the ball for students to bump the ball back over the net before putting their equipment away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Teacher starts off as the server.
- Mover servers and hula-hoops closer to the net if students are having trouble bumping the ball over.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Reflection:
- Why is a proper platform important for bumping the ball?
- How will you continue to improve your ability to bump the ball?
TARGET BUMPING II
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions
EQUIPMENT
10 volleyballs
3 short cones
1 hula-hoop
1 net
Optional: 2 hula-hoops
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Target Bumping II. In this game, the objective is to bump a served ball over the net.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will start off as the server.
- Before the game begins, stand single file behind your team’s marker cone.
- When I say, “GO!” I will underhand serve a volleyball to the first person in line.
- Once the ball is served, bump it over the net.
- Retrieve the ball after it has been hit and bring it back to the hula-hoop behind the thrower. Then, go to the back of the line to the right of you.
- We will begin a new game when everyone has had a chance to bump the ball.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Move the marker cone back 10 feet. Students have to run and then bump the ball to the target.
Game 3: Divide students into teams. For each ball bumped over the net, a point is awarded to the team.
Variation: To increase difficulty, add two hula-hoops on the server’s side. Have students aim for the hula-hoops over the net.
Exit Ticket: Teacher serves the ball for students to bump the ball back over the net before putting their equipment away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Teacher starts off as the server. If serving is too difficult, toss the ball.
- Depending on class size, add another thrower.
