Objective: Set a tossed ball to a target

Volleyball Unit | Level 22

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to set a tossed ball to a target.

IMPORTANCE
Setting a tossed ball to a target is important because it increases your accuracy and aim to set the ball to another teammate for a spike or bump.

VOCABULARY
Set: a passing move in volleyball using fingers (typically the second touch after the ball comes over).

When setting a tossed ball to a target, it is important to:

1.png

1. Position yourself directly under the ball in the ready position (feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, slight forward lean).

2.png

2. Extend your arms above your forehead and make a triangle with your hands (hands do not touch).

3.png

3. Contact the ball with your fingertips.

4.png

4. Straighten your arms and legs as you push the ball upwards and towards your target.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will go first. Spread out onto the field and stand 3 – 5 feet away from your partner. When I say, "GO!" one teammate will toss the ball and the other will set it back. After you have made five sets, switch roles.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

OCEAN OF PEARLS IV

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 volleyball per student
4 hula-hoops
10 short cones
Optional: 10 beach balls

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Ocean of Pearls IV. In this game, your goal is to set a tossed pearl (volleyball) to a hula-hoop to collect as many pearls as possible without being caught by the pirates (taggers).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select two pirates and four catchers in charge of putting the pearls into the ship (hula-hoops).
  • The rest of the class will be fishermen (runners).
  • When I say, “GO!” the fishermen must:
    • Run across the ocean
    • Grab a pearl
    • Run back and low toss the pearl to any catcher
  • The catcher must set the ball back to the runner and then place it in the ship.
  • Once the fishermen are past the cones, they are safe and cannot be tagged.
  • If a fisherman is tagged by a pirate, he/she must go back and get a high-five from a catcher to get back in the game. If a fisherman is in possession of a pearl, he/she must return it.
  • Fishermen must toss pearls outside of the boundary cones.
  • Pirates cannot cross either side of the boundary cones.
  • We will begin a new game when all the pearls are collected. At the beginning of each game, new pirates and catchers will be selected.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase the number of pirates or the amount of times catchers have to set a pearl.
Variation:  Add beach balls as different colored pearls.
Exit Ticket: Teacher tosses a ball for students to set into the hula-hoop before putting the equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Demonstrate the proper setting form?
    • What surprised you about your ability to set the ball?

TRIPLE PASS II

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
10 volleyballs
3 short cones
1 hula-hoop
1 net
Optional: 5 hula-hoops

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Triple Pass. In this game, your goal is to set a tossed ball to a target over the net.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, I will divide you into three groups.
  • When I say, “GO!” I will toss the ball to you and you must try to set the ball over the net.
  • If the ball goes over the net or not, bring it back to the middle hula-hoop and move to the back of the line to the left of you.
  • We will begin a new game when everyone has had a turn setting from each group.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Do not keep score.
Game 2: Have hula-hoops worth certain points. Students can either keep track of their score individually or you can have the whole team work together to earn points (in this version students do not rotate).
Game 3: Move the hula-hoops in different directions/formations.
Game 4: Have each group take one giant step back. Continue to take a step back each round until setting the ball over the net too difficult.
Exit Ticket: Teacher tosses a ball for students to set into the hula-hoop before putting their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students to use proper setting technique.
    • Have students move closer to the net if they are having trouble hitting the ball over.
