TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to volley a lightweight object with consecutive hits.
IMPORTANCE
Volleying a lightweight object with consecutive hits is important because the increased repetition improves your reaction time when hitting the ball.
VOCABULARY
Volley: hit of the ball made before it touches the ground.
Consecutive: continuous without stopping.
When volleying a lightweight object with consecutive hits, it is important to:
1. Face your target.
2. Hit the ball with your palm (open hand).
3. Keep the ball in the air.
PRACTICE
- I will divide the class into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will go first. Spread out in the field with your ball. When I say, "GO!" hit your ball upwards with one hand. Do not let the ball hit the ground. Your teammate will count aloud for you. After you have made five hits in a row, switch roles.
- Repeat as many times as needed.
LITTLE CEASARS
TIME
15-25 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game
EQUIPMENT
1 beach ball per 4-5 students
24 fuzzy balls
1 short cone per team
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Little Caesars. In this game, you are all chefs trying to cook a delicious pizza pie. Your goal is to volley the pizza dough (beach ball) with consecutive hits as your teammates find the rest of the ingredients (fuzzy balls).
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into four teams.
- Before the game begins, Ro Sham Bo to decide who will be the Little Caesar to toss the dough first.
- Everyone else will find the ingredients to make your pizza.
- When I say, “GO!” Little Caesar will toss the dough in the air as many times as possible while the other teammates run and bring back the ingredients.
- If the dough falls to the ground at any point, pick it up and continue tossing.
- We will begin a new game when every team has brought back their ingredients.
- At the beginning of each game, a new Little Caesar will toss the dough.
Game 1: Select one color/ingredient for each team to collect (red-pepperoni, orange-orange pepper, yellow-yellow onions or extra cheese, green-spinach, blue-blue squid, purple- grapes/egg plant). Change the color/ingredient for each team every round.
Game 2: Each teammate must bring back a different color ingredient.
Game 3: Increase the number of dough and Little Caesars.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate volleying the ball with two consecutive hits before putting their equipment away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- If volleying continuously is too difficult, have students volley then catch the dough.
- Increase or decrease the amount of teams based on class size.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Reflection:
- I hit the ball with an __________ hand.

RATATOUILLE

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Ratatouille. In this game, you are all rats trying to make your way across the kitchen (end zone) without being caught by the chef. Your goal is to scurry to the other side of the kitchen to volley a bag of flour (beach ball) with consecutive hits.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will begin as the chef and everyone else will be a rat.
- Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on either side of the kitchen.
- When I say, "GO!" you must scurry across the kitchen and make it to the opposite side.
- When you get there, you must volley the bag of flour a certain number of times.
- If you get to a bag of flour the same time as another student, Ro Sham Bo to decide who goes first.
- The number will change each round.
- If I tag you at any point, you become a chef.
- If the flour leaves the kitchen at any point, you become a chef.
- We will begin a new game when there is one rat left.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. Let students run across without tagging for a couple of rounds.
Game 2: If the flour is dropped at any point, the student becomes a chef.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate volleying the ball with two consecutive hits before putting their equipment away.

Today we are playing Beat the Clock. Your goal is to volley a lightweight object with consecutive hits before the runners get back to the baseline.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two teams - runners and hitters.
- Before the game begins, runners must line up shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the baseline.
- Hitters must line up shoulder-to-shoulder behind the baseline with their beach ball.

- Hitters have to toss and volley with one hand that many number of times.
- All volleys must be counted aloud.
- When a hitter is done they must sit down.
- Meanwhile, runners have to sprint to the midline, touch a cone with their hand and sprint back.
- Runners will try and get back before all hitters make their volleys.
- At the end of each round, hitters and runners switch.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. Keep the number the same for both hitters and runners so they both get a chance. Start with a low number.
Game 2: If a ball drops to the ground, the hitter must start over.
Game 3: Runners must run backwards.
Game 4: Runners must run in pairs (holding another teammate’s hand).
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate volleying the ball with two consecutive hits before putting their equipment away.
