Objective: Volley a lightweight object upwards

Volleyball Unit | Level 2

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to volley a lightweight object upwards.

IMPORTANCE
Volleying a lightweight object is important because it improves your hand-eye coordination and timing. This is also the first step in learning how to hit the ball.

VOCABULARY
Volley:
hit of the ball made before it touches the ground.

When volleying a lightweight object upwards, it is important to:

3. Swing your arm back and hit the ball with your palm (open hand).

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide students into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will go first. Line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your ball. When I say, "GO!" hit your ball aiming towards the end line. After you have hit the ball, your teammate will retrieve it and bring it back to the baseline. Switch roles.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

KUNG FU PANDA

6 short cones
5 beach balls
1 flag per student
1 hula-hoop
Optional: 24 fuzzy balls

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Kung Fu Panda. In this game, you are pandas in the deep forest of China trying to learn new kung fu skills. Your goal is to earn your belt by volleying a lightweight object upwards.  .   

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, line up single file behind the marker cone.
  • When I say, “GO!” I will throw the beach ball underhand to the first student in line.
  • After you hit the beach ball with one hand:
    • Run and place it back in the hula-hoop
    • Run to the end line and do a kung fu move
    • Grab a kung fu belt (flag) and bring it back to your dot
    • Get back in line to restart
  • We will begin a new game when all the kung fu belts are collected.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Variation: Add in fuzzy balls along with kung fu belts. Fuzzy balls are medals that pandas can additionally earn after they earn a belt.
Exit Ticket: Students volley the ball to teacher for the teacher to put the equipment away.

  • Approach:
    • Remind students there is no order when they get back in line.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.

1 beach ball per 2 students
Optional: 1 balloon per 2 students

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Clean Up Your Yard x 4. Your goal is to keep your yard clean by volleying the beach ball upwards and into the other team's side. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into four teams.
  • When I say, “GO!” each team will volley all of the balls from their side to the other team’s side.
  • You may not throw a ball at another student on the other team.
  • You may only volley one ball at a time using one hand.
  • After a two-minute round, each team will collect and count all of the balls on only their side.
 

Game 1: Both teams volley balls into each other’s yard for two minutes.
Game 2: Consider making the time limit shorter or longer.
Variation: If a student holds onto more than one ball at a time, “freeze” him/her for 20 seconds.
Variation: Consider adding balloons along with the beach balls.
Exit Ticket: Students volley the ball to teacher for the teacher to put the equipment away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • If a student does not want to play the game, consider designating him/her as the ball master– he/she can rescue balls that go out-of-bounds.
  • Safety:
    • Remind students to make sure there is no one directly in front of them when they are volleying.
  • ELL Accommodation:

    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.

SWAMPY RIVER

EQUIPMENT
2 long jump ropes
1 volleyball per 2 students
5 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Swampy River. In this game, your goal is to volley a lightweight object upwards and over the swampy river before the alligator eats it!

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.  
  • The students at the baseline will start with the beach ball first.
  • When I say, “GO!” hit the ball underhand (with one hand) so that it goes across the swampy river.  
  • If your ball falls into the river, quickly retrieve it before an alligator eats it.
  • Once the ball is served over the river, the other side gets a chance to serve.
  • The river will widen at the beginning of each game.
  • You must stay behind the river boundary when you are serving.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Students have to make three complete serves before widening the river.
Game 2: Students have to make five complete passes before widening the river.
Game 3: Elimination round. If your ball drops in the swampy river, then an alligator has eaten it. You may practice throwing and catching the ball with your partner somewhere in the field.
Exit Ticket: Students volley the ball to teacher for the teacher to put the equipment away.
