KICKBALL

TIME
20-30 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
4 hula-hoops
1 playground ball
1 short cone

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Kickball. In this game, the objective is to catch a thrown ball over the shoulder to help your team get three outs and more runs than the opposing team.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams. I will decide which team will kick first and which team will start in the field.
  • If you are kicking first, decide the batting order and line up single file behind home plate.
  • If you are fielding first, decide which position each student will play (catcher, 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, outfield).
  • I will be the pitcher for each team.
  • A kicker is out if:
    • the ball is caught in the air
    • the ball is thrown to the base before the kicker steps on it
    • the ball is thrown overhand and hits the kickers feet while running to a base
  • A ball is considered foul if it goes behind 3rd or 1st base when kicked.
  • A kicker cannot strike out (each kicker gets a turn to kick the ball).
  • Kickers and fielders will switch after three outs or after a team has scored five runs.

Game 1: Teacher is the pitcher.
Game 2: Students can pitcher.
Exit Ticket: Students catch a ball over their shoulder thrown by the teacher while running to the midline before putting their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • What two things should you remember while trying to catch a ball over your shoulder?
    • What was most challenging about catching a ball over your shoulder?

HIGH STAKES

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
4 fuzzy balls
5 short cones

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing High Stakes. In this game, the objective is to catch a thrown ball over the shoulder and be the first student to reach 500 points.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the field into two sections – competitive and non-competitive.
  • I will select the first two throwers.
  • Before the game begins, spread out onto the field and turn your back so you are not facing the thrower.
  • When I say, “GO!” the thrower will throw the fuzzy ball overhand into the field.
  • After the ball is thrown, the thrower has three seconds to call out how many points the ball is worth.
  • Points must be either: 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500.
  • If a student catches the ball he/she gets the allotted number of points.
  • If a thrower yells, “Bankrupt!” and a student catches the ball, he/she starts back at 0.
  • Students cannot push, shove or take the ball out of another student’s hands.
  • Each student must keep track of his/her points.
  • The first student to get to 500 becomes the thrower.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Throws can throw two balls (one quickly after the other, not at the same time).
Exit Ticket: Students catch a ball over their shoulder thrown by the teacher while running to the midline before putting their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • For larger classes, split the field into four rectangles so four different games can be played at the same time.
    • If students are not getting a chance to throw, rotate throwers each round.
