TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to pass through a long rope turned by others.
IMPORTANCE
Passing through a long jump rope is important because it helps you practice moving to the rhythm of a turning rope so that you can travel through without affecting its path.
VOCABULARY
Long jump rope: a rope that requires two people to turn the rope while one or more people jump the rope.
When passing through a long jump rope, it is important to:
1. Stand to the side of the jump rope.
2. Watch it make a few turns to get the timing down.
3. Once the rope passes by, run directly through the center to the other side.
PRACTICE:
- (Choose two capable students to be the first turners.) Form a line behind the marker cone. One at a time, your job is to watch the turning rope closely and once it hits the ground and starts to move upwards, run safely through to the other side and line up behind the other marker cone to start a new line. Everyone has two tries. The turners can count "1-2-3" aloud so that you know when to go. When all of you have gone from the first line, I will choose two new turners and you will all start from the new line on the other side of the jump rope.
RAINBOW RUN
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game
EQUIPMENT
1 long jump rope
1 short cone
2 hula-hoops
24 fuzzy balls
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Rainbow Run. In this game, you and your teammates are leprechauns and have to get to the pot of gold (hula-hoop and fuzzy balls) by running under the rainbow (long jump rope). Your goal is to pass through the rainbow turned by others to collect the gold from the pot.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will be the lead turner and will either tie one end of the jump rope to a stationary object (post, fence, tree, etc.) or select one of you to assist with turning the jump rope.
- Before the game begins, line up behind the marker cone.
- When I say, “GO!” one student at a time will run under the rainbow while it is moving.
- When you reach the other side pick up a piece of gold, run back around the rainbow, place your piece of gold into the empty pot and get back into line.
- If any part of your body touches the rainbow, go to the back of the line and try again when it is your turn.
Game 1: Each student runs straight through to the other side.
Game 2: Students go two at a time while holding hands.
Game 3: Fill the pot of gold with fuzzy balls. Have one student at a time go under the rainbow and bring back a coin from the pot of gold.
Game 4: Have two students at a time retrieve a coin from the pot of gold.
Variation: If running under the moving rope is too difficult, have student jump over the rope while it is stationary.
Exit Ticket: Students take a turn trying to pass through a long jump rope turned by others before lining up to go back to class.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Demonstrate how to successfully run under the rope without touching or stopping it.
- Safety:
- Tell students when they should run under the rope, if they cannot do it on their own.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Model skills in a small group.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Use standards from previous grade levels to measure growth and progress.
- Reflection:
- How does timing impact jumping with a long jump rope?
- What was most challenging for you today?
WATERFALL
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game
EQUIPMENT
4 long jump ropes
2 short cones
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Waterfall. In this game, your goal is to have your whole group pass through the waterfall (long jump rope) turned by others.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into four groups (depending on class size).
- Before the game begins, line up behind your group’s marker cone. I will choose two students in each group to turn the rope first.
- When I say, “GO!” one student will run through the waterfall.
- After one student runs through the waterfall, then two students and so forth will run through.
- If the waterfall is stopped in rotation or touches a student, begin again with just one student running through.
- Switch rope turners after the whole group has run through the waterfall.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Groups join each other to create two larger groups. Tie together ropes if needed.
Game 3: Depending on class size, have the whole class participate as one group.
Exit Ticket: Students take a turn trying to pass through a long jump rope turned by others before lining up to go back to class.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Demonstrate how to successfully run under the rope without touching or stopping it.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:

ROLLER BALL IV
TIME
15-25 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game
EQUIPMENT
24 fuzzy balls
1 hula-hoop
10 short cones
1 long jump rope
Optional: 10 short cones and 10 tall cones
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Roller Ball IV. In this game, there is a roller (thrower), rolling out roller balls (fuzzy balls) as the class runs by. Your goal, once you have been hit by a roller ball, is to pass through a long jump rope turned by others so that you may join the rollers and get the rest of the class out.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder.
- I will select one or more students to be the rollers (throwers) and two students to turn the rope.
- Rollers must remain in the roller zone when throwing/rolling.
- When I say, “GO!” run from the baseline to the end line without being hit by a roller ball.
- If you are hit below the waist or if you go out-of-bounds, you must pass through the turning rope before joining the rollers for the next round.
- All hits must be below the waist and there are no headshots and no neck shots allowed.
- We will begin a new round, once everyone has made their way to the end line or the baseline.
- The rollers may only leave their zone to retrieve balls in between rounds, but never during a round.
- We will start a new game once there is one jumper left.
Game 1: Teacher is the first roller and referee.
Game 2: Allow jumpers to go between the baseline and end line on their own until all balls have been rolled.
Variation: Add obstacles on the field (tall cones, short cones, etc.) for jumpers to jump over.
Exit Ticket: Students take a turn trying to pass through a long jump rope turned by others before lining up to go back to class.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- If students disagree about being hit consider adding a Three Life Rule, where jumpers get three lives OR add a Rollers Choice rule where the rollers make the final decision.
- Student Role:
- Add a ball master on the side of the field opposite of the rollers to retrieve balls.
