TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to practice complimenting others.

IMPORTANCE
Complimenting others is important because it motivates, promotes positivity and boosts self-esteem in others.

VOCABULARY
Compliment:
to say something of praise or admiration.

These phrases can be used during different situations that may come up while playing a game with teammates:

Encouraging Phrases

  • “You can do it!”
  • “Keep going!”
  • “I am confident in your ability.”
  • “We care about you.”
  • “I know you can handle it.”
  • “We can do this together.”
  • “We need your help with ___.“
  • “Can you help us do ____?“
  • “We won’t be able to do ___ without you.”
  • “We really want you to be a part of our team.”

Congratulating Phrases

LIMBO

EQUIPMENT
1 short jump rope
2 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Limbo. Your goal is to see how low you can go under the rope without touching the ground or the rope itself. Remember to compliment others when you see someone doing a good job.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select one of you to be a post to help hold the jump rope.
  • Before the game begins, form a single file line behind the marker cone.
  • When I say, “GO!” try your best to go under the rope.
  • You may not have any part of your body touch the ground or the rope.
  • You must go under the rope with your head pointing up towards the sky.
  • Once you are on the other side, form a line behind the other cone and give the remaining students high-fives as they come through.
  • We will begin a new game once everyone has gone under once.
 

Game 1: Have all students successfully go under the jump rope once.
Game 2: Lower the jump rope each round.
Game 3: Have two students go at a time holding hands under the jump rope.
Game 4: Try going backwards under the jump rope. 
Exit Ticket:
Students share compliments about their fellow classmates.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Choose a trustworthy student to hold the other end of the rope.
  • Safety:
    • Consider having students stretch and warm-up before trying to twist and bend their bodies.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.

RIVER CROSSING

EQUIPMENT
2 long jump ropes
24 fuzzy balls
1 dot per student
2 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing River Crossing. In this game, you are all a part of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition. You have come across a river (jump ropes) in your path and you need to get to the other side. The waters are very dangerous and the only way to cross is to use the steppingstones (dots) while holding hands with another classmate. Your goal is to work together to get across the river. Remember to compliment others when you see them doing a good job crossing the river.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select each of you a partner to cross the river with.
  • You may only step on the steppingstones.
  • You cannot step on the river or you will have to start over.
  • You may share a steppingstone with your partner.
  • We will begin a new game when everyone has crossed safely.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Partners cross the river holding hands.
Game 3: Remove 1-2 dots so that it becomes more challenging to cross.
Game 4: Remove a few more dots. Add a fisherman on the side of the river that is casting out a line (fuzzy balls).  If a student gets hits with a line, he/she will have to start over.
Exit Ticket: Students share compliments about their fellow classmates.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Switch up partners each game so that students get a chance to work with multiple students.
  • Safety:
    • Partners must hold hands without interlacing fingers to avoid unnecessary injury.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.

GOPHER TUNNEL

EQUIPMENT
6 hula-hoops
1 fuzzy ball

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Gopher Tunnel. Your goal is to work together to form a tunnel so that each person can go through. Remember to compliment others when you see them doing a good job going through the tunnel.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, I will select two students for every hula-hoop to hold on either side as the tunnel builders.
  • I will select a student to crawl like a gopher through the tunnel.
  • Everyone will take turns either being the gopher or a tunnel builder.
  • You may only move safely through the tunnel.
 

Game 1: Have each student go through the tunnel once.
Game 2: Have a student try and throw a fuzzy ball through the tunnel, then like a gopher chase after it.
Game 3: Have students try and walk backwards through the tunnel.
Game 4: If students are careful, have two students crawl through the tunnel in opposite directions.
Game 5: Spread out the tunnel so the hoops are far away from each other (about five feet apart) and students have to run in between each one.
Exit Ticket: Students share compliments about their fellow classmates.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Have students cheer on their classmates as they make their way through the tunnel.
    • Gophers can high-five tunnel builders as they are going through the tunnel.
  • Safety:
    • Make sure students keep the hula-hoops still so gophers do not trip.
