TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to pass the ball in water polo.
IMPORTANCE
Passing the ball is important because it is an essential skill to learn in order to play water polo.
VOCABULARY
Grip: to grasply tightly.
When passing the ball, it is important to:
1. Create a frim grip by applying pressure with your pinkie and thumb to hold the ball with one hand.
2. Bring your elbow above the water surface.
3. Overhand throw the ball to your target.
PRACTICE
- I will divide the class into partners. With your partner, find an area of the pool to practice your passing. If you and your partner feel comfortable, you may practice in the deep end of the pool. When I say, "GO!" begin passing the ball back and forth with your partner.
- Repeat as many times as needed.
SQUID IN THE MIDDLE
TIME

EQUIPMENT
1 water polo ball
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Squid in the Middle. In this game, the objective is to keep the ball away from the squid (person in the middle) by quickly passing the ball to your other teammates.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into teams of four.
- Ro Sham Bo to decide who in your team will start off as the squid.
- With your team, spread out in the pool and form a triangle with one of your teammates in the middle.
- When I say, “GO!” teammates will begin passing the ball to one another while the squid tries to intercept the passes.
- If the squid gets the ball, the teammate closest to the ball is now in the middle.
- If the squid does not get the ball after 10 passes, switch roles with another teammate.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Have students join different teams.
Exit Ticket: Have students pass a ball to the teacher before exiting the water.

- Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.

WATER BASEBALL III
TIME

EQUIPMENT
1 kickboard

1 beach ball
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Water Baseball III. In this game, the objective is to pass the ball to prevent the opposing team from earning more runs.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two teams. I will decide which team will bat first and which team will start in the field.
- If you are batting first, decide the batting order and line up single file behind home plate.
- Your kickboard will be used as your bat.
- If you are fielding first, decide which position each student will play (catcher, 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, outfield).
- I will choose a pitcher to begin the game.
- A batter is out if:
- the ball is caught in the air
- the ball is thrown to the base before the batter swims to it
- A ball is considered foul if it is hit out of the pool.
- If you hit the ball, begin swim using any stroke to 1st plate.
- Batters and fielders will switch after three outs or after a team has scored five runs.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Have students pass a ball to the teacher before exiting the water.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.
- Remind students to be honest when tagging the bases.
- Remind students that because the bases are under water that we will give “close calls” to the batting team.

CHALLENGER
TIME

1 water polo ball
4 short cones
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Challenger. In this game, the objective is to pass the ball during your challenge with the all-star team.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into teams of two.
- I will choose one team to begin as the all-stars.
- Everyone else will form a single-file line.
- The all-stars will compete against the other teams until a challenging team wins.
- When I say, “GO!” I will throw a ball into the middle of the game and both teams can swim out to try to gain possession of the ball.
- The first team to score a point wins.
- The team to win the challenge will stay in the pool and the next challenging team in line will play.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase the amounts of points teams have to earn to win the game.
Exit Ticket: Have students pass a ball to the teacher before exiting the water.

- Approach:
- If needed, provide a noncompetitive game in the shallow end of the pool.
- If scoring a goal is too difficult, have teams win by whoever the make a complete pass first.
