TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to wear a life jacket.
IMPORTANCE
Wearing a life jacket is important because accidents can happen at anytime and a life jacket is a necessity in preventing a drowning if a person were to be tossed in the water or loss consciousness. In most states, it is the law for children to wear a life jacket while on a boat or personal water craft.
VOCABULARY
Lifejacket: a buoyant jacket that will keep a person afloat in the water.
When wearing a lifejacket, it is important to:
1. Make sure your life jacket is a proper fit for your size and weight by checking the manufactor lable.
2. Your life jacket must be US Coast Guard Approved.
3. Wear your life jacket when you are boating, near water, or participating in water activities.
PRACTICE
- I will divide the class into groups of three. I will pass out a lifejacket to each group. Ro Sham Bo with your group to decide who will try the lifejacket on first. When I say, "GO!" begin to practice putting your lifejacket on. Once you have put your lifejacket, pass it to the next person in your group.
- Repeat as many times as needed.
LIFEJACKET RELAY
TIME
15-25 minutes

EQUIPMENT
1 short cone per 5 students
1 tall cone per 5 students
1 life jacket per 5 students
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Lifejacket Relay. Your goal is to wear the lifejacket as you race in the relay.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into teams of five.
- Before the game begins, line up single file behind your team’s marker cone.
- When I say, “GO!” the first teammate in line will put on the lifejacket. As soon as the lifejacket is securely on, you must run, touch the tall cone and run back.
- When you reach your team, take off the lifejacket and hand it to your next teammate then take a seat at the end of the line.
- If I see that your lifejacket is not completely secured or that you did not touch the cone, you must go back and try and again.
- The first team to have all their teammates complete the relay will earn one point.
Game 1: Play as indicated above
Game 2: Have students create their own teams.
Exit Ticket: Have students explain one reason why it is importanct to wear a lifejacket.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Lifejackets. In this game you have been stranded at sea and the only way to make it back to shore is to use your life jackets (dots). Your goal is to get your entire team to the shore while wearing a lifejacket.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into three teams.
- Each team will have five lifejackets.
- When I say, “GO!” you must come up with a plan to get everyone across using the lifejackets.
- The only way to move across the ocean is to step on the lifejackets.
- You can pick up the lifejackets and place them in different positions to cross the ocean.
- If you fall into the ocean (step on the ground), you must start over.
Game 1: Play as indicated above
Game 2: You cannot leave any lifejackets in the ocean.

PASSING SHIPS III

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Passing Ships. In this game, you are all ships trying to cross the ocean safely. Your goal is to cross the ocean when you can answer “Yes” to the statement about wearing a lifejacket.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will begin as the pirate.
- Before the game begins, line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder.
- I will call out a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ statement (Should your lifejacket be US Coast Guard approved? Or, do you need to wear a lifejacket if you are on a boat?)
- If you answer, “Yes” you must run to the end line without being tagged.
- If you answer, “No” you stay on the baseline.
- You have three seconds to leave the baseline after I call out the statement.
- If you are tagged or go out-of-bounds, you become a pirate the next round.
- We will begin a new game once there are no ships left.
Game 1: Give ships three lives, or chances, when tagging.
Game 2: Play as indicated above.
Game 3: Play with flags instead of tagging.
Variation: Designate a student as a lifeguard. If someone gets tagged, the lifeguard can bring him/her a lifejacket (dot).
