Objective: Soccer referee

Soccer Unit | Level 36

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to referee a soccer game.

IMPORTANCE
Refereeing a soccer game is important because the referee is responsible for officiating the game from a neutral point of view and making decisions and calls that enforce the rules of soccer.

VOCABULARY
Referee:
an official who watches a game or match closely to ensure that the rules are adhered to and (in some sports) to arbitrate on matters arising from the play.

GROWFIT RULES

  • The GrowFit rules are a simple, modified version of regulation soccer. If a rule is not mentioned below we will not be following it.
  • If the ball goes out of bounds, the team who did not kick the ball out will get a throw-in (Both feet must be on the ground, two hands must be on the ball, and the ball must be thrown overhead.)
  • If the ball touches a student’s hand intentionally, the other team gets a free kick where he/she touched the ball. Defense must be 10 feet away from the kick.
  • Students cannot kick, trip, slide, charge, push, or hold another student. If this does occur the teacher makes a judgment call (i.e. the student has to sit out for two-minutes for unsafe behavior).
  • Students cannot head balls due to concussions.
  • If the ball crosses the end line it is either a corner kick or a goal kick.
    • If the team attacking the goal kicks it out, it is a goal kick.
    • If the team defending the goal kicks it out, the attacking team gets a corner kick.
  • After a team has scored, the opposing team gets to kick off the ball in the middle of the field.

When refereeing a soccer game, it is important to remember these hand signals:

OBJECTIVE

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into four teams – using flags to tell who you are.
  • Before the game begins, I will choose someone to referee each game.
  • The referee will throw the ball into the middle to begin the game.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.
    • If there not enough students to make even teams the teacher can play.
    • Consider enforcing a passing rule before scoring (must pass to everyone before scoring) if not all students are participating.
    • Depending on class size, consider playing with two teams of 6-11 students each. Each team can have substitutes that can rotate in.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Demonstrate two hand signals you learned today.
    • What hand signal do you think you would use most often and why?
