TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to get to an open space when passing.
IMPORTANCE
Getting to an open space is important because a teammate cannot pass to you without a clear path. If there is a defender between you and your teammate, the ball may be stolen by the defender.
VOCABULARY
Open space: area on the field where the defense is not.
When getting to an open space, it is important to:
1. Find a spot with a clear path between you and the passer.
2. Stay within passing distance from the passer (do not go too far).
3. Raise your hand and call for the ball.
PRACTICE
- Play Monkey in the Middle. (Divide students into groups of four. One student starts in the middle, the other three form a triangle around him/her. The student in the middle tries to intercept the ball when it is passed back and forth. If the ball is intercepted, the student in the middle switches roles with the student in the triangle. Students forming the triangle can move around the field.)
WHIRLPOOL
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game
EQUIPMENT
2 soccer balls
20 short cones
Optional: +5 soccer balls
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Whirlpool. Your goal is to switch spots with a kicker by getting to an open space and successfully receiving the ball.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will select two kickers. Both kickers will stand in the center.
- I will select one whirlpool defender. He/she will stand in the middle circle.
- Everyone else will stand on the outer circle and must move in a clockwise motion.
- When I say, “GO!” the kickers will try and pass the ball to a classmate standing in the outer circle.
- If the kicker and classmate make a complete pass, they switch positions.
- If the whirlpool defender blocks a kickers pass, they switch positions.
- Each complete pass must be made to a different classmate.
- We will begin a new game when every student has had a chance at each role.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add more kickers or whirlpool defenders based on class size.
Exit Ticket: Students dribble past defenders, assigned by the teacher, to get to an open space to pass to the ball to the teacher to put away.
