TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to shoot off the pass.
IMPORTANCE
Shooting off the pass is important when you need to shoot quickly and accurately on goal.
VOCABULARY
Soccer pass: a kick of the ball from player to another.
Plant foot: foot that is on the ground when a kick is made.
When shooting off the pass, it is important to:
1. Place your plant foot next to the ball pointed towards the target.
2. Lock your ankle and keep your toes down.
3. Lean forward and strike the middle of the ball with your laces.
4. Land on your shooting foot after the shot.
PRACTICE
- Move onto Skills Game – Rolling Boulders.
ROLLING BOULDERS
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game
EQUIPMENT
8 soccer balls
1 goal
4 short cones
Optional: 4 tall cones
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Rolling Boulders. In this game, the objective is to shoot off the pass and score on goal.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two teams (rollers and kickers).
- Before the game begins, rollers will line up single file behind the marker cones next to each goal. Kickers will line up single file behind a marker cone in the middle of the filed.
- When I say, “GO!” kickers must start running forward.
- The rollers will then pass a ball to the closet kicker.
- Kickers must dribble the ball, then shoot on goal.
- When you have scored a goal, retrieve your ball and give it to the next roller.
- The next kicker must wait until all balls have been retrieved from the goal before he/she can start running.
- Once a kicker has shot, he/she becomes a roller on either side.
- Once a roller has passed, he/she becomes a kicker on either side.
- We will begin a new game when everyone has had a chance at each role.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add a defender on each goal. Defenders cannot use their hands.
Variation: Add tall cones inside the goal. If a student knocks down a tall cone, he/she gets an extra point.
Exit Ticket: In pairs, students take turns shooting off the pass on goal before putting their soccer balls away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- When switching roles, remind students to walk around the perimeter of the field, not directly in the middle, so they do not interfere with the students passing and shooting.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Reflection:
- When should you shoot off the pass?
- How might you help a classmate improve shooting off the pass?
KICK OUT II
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions
EQUIPMENT
2 goals
2 short cones
4 soccer balls
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Kick Out II. In this game, the objective is to shoot off the pass and score on goal before the student behind you scores.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up single file behind the marker cone.
- I will stand to the side of the goal and will be passing balls to each student.
- When I say, “GO!” the first student in line will run towards the goal and try to shoot the ball that is passed to him/her.
- I will give you a three second head start before passing the next ball.
- If you score a goal before the student behind you, you are safe and rejoin the group at the back of the line.
- If the student behind you scores before you do, you are eliminated.
- If you are eliminated, you may practice dribbling around the perimeter of the field or pass with another teammate who is eliminated.
- We will begin a new game when there is only one student remaining.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. Students can stop the ball before shooting.
Game 2: Students cannot stop the ball before shooting.
Game 3: Decrease the width of the goal.
