Objective: Step over move

Soccer Unit | Level 29

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to perform a step over move.

IMPORTANCE
The step over move is important because it allows you to beat your opponent and advance forward.

VOCABULARY
Dominant leg: the leg that is stronger and more easily controlled.

When performing the step over move, it is important to:

1.png

1. Turn your body in the direction you are faking to go.

2. Bring your dominant leg around the front of the ball.

3.png

3. Touch in the opposite direction, away from the defender, with the outside of your foot.

PRACTICE

  1. Line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your ball in the control position. When I say, “GO!” dribble to the mid-line, perform a step over move and then dribble back to the baseline. When you reach the baseline, put your ball back in the control position to indicate that you are ready.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing World Cup. In this game, the goal is to use a step over move to keep the ball in possession and score a goal.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two.
  • I will choose one student to begin as the goalie.
  • Before the game begins, decide with your team which country you will represent.
  • When I say, “GO!” teams will begin competing against each other to score a goal.
  • If the ball is kicked out-of-bounds or a goal is made, the goalie will throw the ball back into the game.
  • Take a seat on the sidelines if your team scores a goal and wait to play in the next round.
  • The last two teams competing will not advance to the next round and will sit the rest of the game on the sidelines.
  • The winner of the World Cup will be the last team remaining.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Variation: If the game is moving slowly, add a second ball.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate a step over move before putting their soccer balls away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Depending on class size, create teams of three.
    • Divide teams based on athletic ability.
    • Consider enforcing a passing rule before scoring (must pass to your teammate before scoring) if not all students are participating.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Describe what the step over move looks like.
    • What was most challenging about the step over move and why?
