TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to receive a pass while moving.
IMPORTANCE
Receiving a pass while moving is important because it is necessary when a defender is applying pressure and you need to move to an open space to keep the ball in your possession.
VOCABULARY
Receiving toe: the big toe on the foot that will be touching the ball.
When receiving a pass while moving, it is important to:
1. Lock your ankle and keep your receiving toe up.
2. Hold your receiving foot an inch above the ground.
3. Cushion the ball with the inside of your foot.
PRACTICE
- I will divide the class into teams of two. Stand five feet away from your partner at the baseline. When I say, “GO!” pass back and forth to each other while both moving towards the end line. Stop when you’ve reached the end line.
- Repeat as many times as needed.
ROLLING BOULDERS
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game
EQUIPMENT
8 soccer balls
1 goal
4 short cones
Optional: 4 tall cones
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Rolling Boulders. Your goal is to receive a pass while moving from another teammate and make a shot on goal.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two teams (rollers and kickers).
- Before the game begins, rollers will line up single file behind the marker cones next to each goal. Kickers will line up single file behind a marker cone in the middle of the filed.
- When I say, “GO!” kickers must start running forward.
- The rollers will then pass a ball to the closet kicker.
- Kickers must dribble the ball, then shoot on goal.
- When you have scored a goal, retrieve your ball and give it to the next roller.
- The next kicker must wait until all balls have been retrieved from the goal before he/she can start running.
- Once a kicker has shot, he/she becomes a roller on either side.
- Once a roller has passed, he/she becomes a kicker on either side.
- We will begin a new game when everyone has had a chance at each role.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add a defender on each goal. Defenders cannot use their hands.
Variation: Add tall cones inside the goal. If a student knocks down a tall cone, he/she gets an extra point.
Exit Ticket: Students receive a pass from the teacher as they jog one lap before putting their ball away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- When switching roles, remind students to walk around the perimeter of the field, not directly in the middle, so they do not interfere with the students passing and shooting.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Reflection:
- How high should your receiving foot be off the ground when a ball is passed to you?
- What surprised you most about learning how to receive a pass?

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Daytona 500. Your goal is to receive a pass while moving in order to catch up and tag the other team.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two teams.
- Before the game begins, each team will form a single file line behind a marker cone.
- When I say, “GO!” the first student in each line will dribble a lap clockwise around the course and will try to tag the runner from the other team.
- When you get back to your team, pass the ball to the next student.
- When passing the ball, kick the ball a few feet ahead of your classmate so that he/she can get a running head start.
- We will begin a new round when someone is tagged.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Pull flags instead of tagging.
Exit Ticket: Students receive a pass from the teacher as they jog one lap before putting their ball away.
