Objective: Receive a pass while standing still

Soccer Unit | Level 16

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to receive a pass while standing still.

IMPORTANCE
Receiving a pass while standing still is important because it keeps the ball in your possession and away from your opponent. If you do not receive the pass properly, the ball can go in an unwanted direction, out-of-bounds or to your opponent.

VOCABULARY
Soccer pass: a kick of the ball from player to another.

When receiving a pass while standing still, it is important to:

1. Lock your ankle and keep your receiving toe up.

2.png

2. Hold your receiving foot an inch above the ground.

3.png

3. Cushion the ball with the inside of your foot.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. One student will line up on the baseline with the ball. The other student will stand five feet away from him/her. When I say, “GO!” pass the ball back and forth to your teammate. Try and receive at least five passes.
  2. Move onto to Skills Game – Pickle in the Middle.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of four.
  • Ro Sham Bo to decide who in your team will start off as the pickle.
  • Spread out in the field and form a triangle with the rest of your teammates standing 10 feet apart from one another.
  • The pickle will start in the middle of the triangle.
  • When I say, “GO!” the pickle will try and intercept the ball from being passed back and forth.
  • If the pickle gets the ball, the teammate closest to the ball becomes the pickle.
  • If the pickle does not get the ball after 20 passes, switch roles with another teammate.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Students remain standing when passing.
Game 2: Have students switch partners with different teams.
Exit Ticket: Students receive a pass while standing still from the teacher before they put the equipment away.

  • If a hiker is hit, he/she must stay at their cabin.
  • It does not count if a hiker is hit above the knees.
  • We will begin a new game when there are two hikers left.
