Objective: Pass a ball while standing still

Soccer Unit | Level 15

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to pass a ball while standing still.

IMPORTANCE
Passing while standing still is important because it 1) keeps the ball in your possession and away from your opponent, 2) moves the ball to where you cannot dribble and 3) is quicker than dribbling everywhere.

VOCABULARY
Soccer pass:
a kick of the ball from player to another.

When passing a ball while standing still, it is important to:

1. Place your plant foot next to the ball pointed towards the target.

2. Lock your ankle and keep your passing toe up.

3.png

3. Swing the inside of your kicking foot through the middle of the ball.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. One student will line up on the baseline with the ball. The other student will stand five feet away from him/her. When I say, “GO!” pass the ball back and forth to your teammate. Try and make five passes directly to their feet.
  2. Move onto to Skills Game – Tunnel Passers.

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
1 soccer ball per student
1 short cone per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Tunnel Passers. Your goal is to see how many times you can pass a ball while standing still through your partner’s tunnel.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into partners.
  • Each team will stand five feet apart, in the center of the field.
  • Ro Sham Bo with your partner to decide who will start with the ball first.
  • The partner without the ball will stand with their feet apart forming a tunnel.
  • When I say, “GO!” try and kick the ball through your partner’s tunnel.
  • If your ball makes it through the tunnel, take one step back.
  • If your ball does not make it through the tunnel, try again.
  • Once one partner has kicked the ball, the other partner can try.
  • Begin a new round when you have made it to opposite ends of the field.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: If students do not make it through the tunnel, take a step forward.
Exit Ticket: Students stand still as they pass to the teacher for the teacher to put the soccer balls away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Have tunnels choose their names after real tunnels or bridges (Lincoln Tunnel, Golden Gate Bridge, London Bridge, etc.).
    • After a pass is made through a tunnel, the tunnel can change direction.
    • Remind students that balls should be kept on the ground and no balls should be kicked in the air.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • When passing the ball, which part of the ball should you aim to kick?
    • How could you encourage your partner if they were struggling passing the ball?
