TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to kick a non-moving ball while standing still.
IMPORTANCE
Kicking a non-moving ball while standing still is important because it improves your shooting and passing abilities while at the same time working on your balance.
VOCABULARY
Ankle: the joint connecting the foot with the leg.
When kicking a non-moving ball while standing still, it is important to:
1. Place your plant foot next to the ball pointed towards the target.
2. Lock your ankle and keep your toes down.
3. Lean forward and strike the middle of the ball with your laces.
PRACTICE
- Line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder. Put your ball on the ground in the control position. When I say, “GO!” kick your ball as far as you can. Retrieve your ball and head back to the baseline.
- Repeat as many times as necessary.
TUNNEL PASSERS
TIME
15-25 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions
EQUIPMENT
1 soccer ball per student
5 short cones
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Tunnel Passers. Your goal is to kick a non-moving ball while standing still through the tunnels.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will select five students to be tunnels.
- Tunnels must spread out in the field and stand in a straddle. I will place a short cone three feet from each tunnel.
- When I say, “GO!” pick up your ball and place it next to any short cone that is in front of a tunnel.
- Kick your ball through the tunnel.
- If your ball makes it through the tunnel, you may go to another one.
- If your ball does not make it through the tunnel, try again.
- We will begin a new game when I select new tunnels.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add or remove tunnels based on class size.
Exit Ticket: Students kick a non-moving ball while standing still to the teacher to put the equipment away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Have tunnels choose their names after real tunnels or bridges (Lincoln Tunnel, Golden Gate Bridge, London Bridge, etc.).
- After a pass is made through a tunnel, the tunnel can change direction.
- Keep games short so that each student gets a turn at being both a kicker and a tunnel.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Reflection:
- You should lock your ankle and keep your toes __________ while dribbling the ball.

INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two teams – the hikers and the Abominable Snow People.
- Before the game begins, the hikers will line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline.
- The Abominable Snow People will split into two groups and stand on the opposite sides.
- When I say, “GO!” the hikers must run to their cabin.
- The Abominable Snow People must pass snowballs back and forth to one another trying to hit hikers at their feet.
- If a hiker is hit, he/she must stay at the cabin.
- It does not count if a hiker is hit above their knees.
- We will begin a new game when there are two hikers left.
- At the end of each game, hikers and Abominable Snow People will switch roles.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add or remove Abominable Snow People based on class size.
