TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to keep a ball close while dribbling.
IMPORTANCE
Keeping a ball close to your body is important because it improves your ability to dribble under pressure.
VOCABULARY
Push: moving something while touching it for an extended period of time.
When dribbling, it is important to:
1. Keep the ball close to your body.
2. Push the ball with your foot (do not kick it).
PRACTICE
- Line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder. Put your ball on the ground in the control position. When I say, “GO!” dribble your ball to the midline and back. Your ball should not go more than two feet ahead of you.
KEEP IT CLOSE
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-25 students per game
EQUIPMENT
5 short cones
1 soccer ball per student
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Keep It Close. Your goal is to keep your soccer ball close while dribbling to protect your ball from being kicked out-of-bounds by the sweeper.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder with your ball on the baseline.
- When I say, “GO!” start dribbling your ball anywhere inside the field.
- I will try and kick your ball so that it goes outside of the boundary cones.
- If your ball gets kicked out, you become the sweeper and try to kick another student’s ball outside the boundary cones.
- The sweeper must kick a different student’s ball out each time.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add another sweeper.
Exit Ticket: Students keep the ball close to their body as they dribble to put their equipment away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Remind students to keep their heads up while dribbling to avoid bumping into others.
- Remind students the closer they keep their ball to their body, the less chance it will be kicked out by someone else.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Reflection:
- You should push the ball with your foot while dribbling, do not __________ it.
- Something that was hard for me today was __________.
ISLAND BALL
TIME
10-20 minutes
