TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to balance one foot on the ball.
IMPORTANCE
Balancing one foot on the ball is important because it improves your ability to remain steady when shooting and dribbling.
VOCABULARY
Balance: someone or something to remain upright and steady (without falling).
When balancing the ball on one foot, it is important to:
1. Place your foot on top of the ball (the ball does not move).
2. Put your arms straight out to the sides (like an airplane).
PRACTICE
- Line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder. Put your ball on the ground. When I say, “GO!” put your right foot on top of the ball and your arms out like an airplane. Count aloud for 10 seconds. This is called the control position.
- When I say, “GO!” put your left foot on top of the ball. Count aloud for 10 seconds

Game 2: Students run and dribble on green light.
Game 3: Incorporate a “yellow light” for slow motion.
Game 4: Incorporate a “purple light” for dance parties.
Exit Ticket: Students balance one foot on the ball before putting their ball away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Remind students that this is not necessarily a race. It is important to go at a pace that is personally challenging, but allows you the ability to stop quickly.
- Remind students they should be dribbling and not kicking the ball far forward. Students should not be more than two feet away from their ball.
- Safety:
- Have students put their arms out to the sides (like an airplane) to help them balance better.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Reflection:
- When balancing, I put my arms out like an __________.
- I encouraged a friend today by __________.
