Objective: Triathlon

Running Unit | Level 36

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to compete in a triathlon. 

IMPORTANCE
A Triathlon is important because it tests and helps build your cardiovascular and muscular strength.

VOCABULARY
Triathlon: an athletic contest consisting of three different events.

RELAY EVENT

TIME
15-30 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
8-20 students per game

EQUIPMENT
10-15 cones per event
1 baton per team

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Relay Event. In this game, teams will be competing in the sprint, middle distance, and long distance relay race. The objective, is to do your best in each event of the triathlon 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of four. I will choose a student to be score keeper at each event.
  • Each team will compete in each event.
  • Before the event begins, decide with your team which of you will run in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and last position.
  • Decide which relay race you and your team will begin at.
  • At each event: 
    • Have three teams compete (depending on class size)the first runner begins in a block start position with the baton
    • The baton must be passed in the exchange zone
    • Teams earn points depending on which place they come in:
      • 3rd- 10, 2nd- 20, 1st- 30 points  
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Have the top three teams from each event compete in a final round.
Exit ticket: Ask students what goal they set for themselves.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Discuss with students beforehand that this is a winning and losing game and if students do not feel comfortable they can participate in another role of the game.  
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Have students share goals they set for themselves with two other classmates before sharing with teacher on the way out of class.

RUNNING EVENT
