EQUIPMENT
20 short cones
1 blindfold per 2 students
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Mountains and Canyons. Your goal is to work together to flip as many of the cones into position as possible.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide you into two teams – mountains and canyons.
- Before the game begins you must line up shoulder-to-shoulder on your team’s side.
- When I say, “GO!” mountains must flip all of the short cones pointing up, while the canyons must flip all of the cones facing down.
- A cone may only be touched by one player at a time
- When I say, “3-2-1 FREEZE!” you must lift your hands up in the air and go back to your team’s side.
- I will count how many cones are mountains and how many are canyons.
- We will begin a new game when I have reset all the cones.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. Do not keep score.
Game 2: Play as indicated above. Keep score.
Game 3: Have students partner up on each team. One teammate must wear a blindfold while the other teammate will be his/her guide. Switch roles after each round.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.
- Discussion: Ask students to share examples of who they saw doing a good job at communicating with their team and/or partner during this game.
