Hockey Unit | Level 33

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to hit pass.

IMPORTANCE
A hit pass important because it is a more powerful way to move the ball across the field.

VOCABULARY
Hit Pass:
a powerful and quick pass to a teammate.

When hit passing, it is important to:

1. Start with your body sideways to your target.

2. Stop the ball.

3. Bring your stick back, keeping it below your shoulder as you aim to hit behind the ball.

4. Follow through towards your target.

 

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into partners. Have one partner find a spot on the baseline and the other partner on the midline. When I say, "GO!" begin practicing your hit pass.

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing a Scrimmage. In this game, the objective is to use a hit pass to help your team move the ball down the field and score a goal.  

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into teams of five – using flags to tell who you are.
  • Ro Sham Bo to decide which team will start with the ball.
  • When I say, "GO!" the team with the ball will start first.  
  • You cannot check, shove or push another teammate.
  • If a ball goes out-of-bounds, the teacher will throw it in.
  • Goalies are not allowed.
  • Defending students must remain 3 – 5 feet away from their goal.
  • If a goal is scored, the opposing team starts with the ball at the midline.
  • After 10 minutes, we will rotate teams.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: In partners, students hit pass back and forth before putting their equipment away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Increase the number of courts based on class size. There should be no more than five students per team.
    • If not all students are participating, enforce a rule stating, teams cannot score unless each teammate has received a pass
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection: 
    • What is the importance of a hit pass?
    • Do you think you would feel comfortable using a hit pass in a game?

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Biscuit in the Basket. In this game, the objective is to hit pass and shoot a goal before your opponent does.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two.
  • I will select the first two teams to start off on the field.
  • Before the game begins, the first team will stand at the midline. 
  • Everyone else will form a line at the baseline or end line with their teammate.
  • When I say, "GO!" the second team in line will pass a ball out to the first team at the midline.   
  • Once the first team receives the ball, the game is open to a two-on-two play.
  • The team to score first, stays on the court.
  • The team that did not score, will go to the end of the line at the opposing base or end line.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: In partners, students hit pass back and forth before putting their equipment away.

  • Approach:
    • This game is intended to be played on a half-field. If your class size is smaller, play with one whole group.
    • Give students the option to be in a competitive or non-competitive group.

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Challenger. In this game, the objective is to use a hit pass during your challenge with the all-star team.   

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two.  
  • I will choose one team to begin as the all-stars.
  • Everyone else will form a single-file line.  
  • The all-stars will compete against the other teams until a challenging team wins.
  • When I say, “GO!” a team member from both teams will begin in a face-off.
  • The first team to score a points wins.
  • The team to win the challenge will stay on the court and the next challenging team in line will play.  
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase the amounts of points teams have to earn to win the game.
Exit Ticket: In partners, students hit pass back and forth before putting their equipment away.
