Objective: Receive a pass while being defended

Hockey Unit | Level 23

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to receive a pass while being defended.

IMPORTANCE
Receiving a pass while being defended is important because it allows your team to keep possession of the ball. This skill in necessary in a competitive, dynamic play environment.

VOCABULARY
Defender:
a player assigned to guard another player on the opposing team.

When receiving a pass while being defended, it is important to:

1. Position your body between the ball and the defender. 

2. Place the hockey stick out by your front foot.

3. Cushion the ball with the hockey stick.

TIME
10-20 minutes

EQUIPMENT
1 Wiffle Ball per 4 students
1 hockey stick per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Pass the Puck. In this game, your goal is to receive a pass while being defended and keep the Wiffle Ball away from the person in the middle by quickly passing it to your other teammates. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of four.
  • Ro Sham Bo to decide who in your team will start off as the middle person.
  • Spread out in the field and form a triangle with your teammates, standing 10 feet apart from one another.
  • The middle person will start in the middle of the triangle.
  • When I say, “GO!” teammates will begin passing the ball back and forth to one another while the middle person tries to intercept the passes.
  • If the middle person gets the ball, the teammate closest to the ball becomes the him/her.
  • If the middle person does not get the ball after 20 passes, switch roles with another teammate.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Teammates must remain standing while passing.
Game 2: Teammates can move to different areas in the field, but must remain in a triangle shape.
Game 3:  Have students join different teams.
Exit Ticket: Teacher passes to students as they are being defended.

  • Approach:
    • Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing a Half-Court Hockey. In this game, your goal is to work with your team to receive a pass while being defended and score as many goals as possible.  

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of five – using flags to tell who you are.
  • Each team must split their teammates into offense and defense. Offense must remain on one half of the field and defense must remain on the other. You cannot cross the midline.
  • I will decide which team starts with the ball.
  • When I say, "GO!" the team with the ball will start first.  
  • You cannot check, shove or push another teammate.
  • If a ball goes out-of-bounds, the teacher will throw it in.
  • Goalies are not allowed and defending students must remain 3 – 5 feet away from their goal.
  • If a goal is scored, the opposing team starts with the ball at the midline.
  • After 10 minutes, will we rotate teams.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Teacher passes to students as they are being defended.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students there will be an unequal number of teammates on offense and defense. You must decide which side is more important to have more teammates on.
    • Increase the number of courts based on class size. There should be no more than five students per team.
    • If not all students are participating, enforce a rule stating that team cannot score unless each teammate received a pass.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.

COACH'S QUARTERBACK

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Coach’s Quarterback. In this game, your goal is to work with your team to receive a pass while being defended and score as many goals as possible. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on either the baseline or the end line.
  • Each team will have a goal to score on.
  • I will set the ball in the middle of the field.
  • When I say, "GO!" I will call out a certain number of students from each team (ex."8 blue, 7 green, etc.")
  • You must work with your team to send out the exact number of students for each play.
  • Teams are awarded one point if they score a goal.
  • If a team has an incorrect number of teammates on the field and a point is scored, it does not count.
  • You cannot check, shove or push another student.
  • If a ball goes out-of-bounds, the play is dead. 
  • Goalies are not allowed.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Teacher passes to students as they are being defended.

    • Allows students a couple of minutes to strategize before the game begins.
    • Switch the color order each round for fairness.
  • ELL Accommodation:

    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
