ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Objective: Pass off the dribble

Hockey Unit | Level 22

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to pass off the dribble.

IMPORTANCE
Passing off the dribble is important because it allows you to keep the ball in your possession as well as quickly move the ball to where you cannot dribble.

VOCABULARY
Dribble:
to advance a ball or puck by giving it a series of short pushes.

When passing off the dribble, it is important to:

1. Start with your body sideways to your target.

2. Bring the ball behind your back foot.

3. Step towards your target as you push the ball forward.

4. Pass the ball to where your target will be (not where they are).

PRACTICE

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
4 hockey sticks
2 Wiffle Balls
2 tall cones
4 different dots (red, yellow, blue, green)

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Ratatat! Your goal is to pass off the dribble and make your way around the entire course.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams. Each team will form a single file line behind their short cone.
  • The course runs in a clockwise direction.
  • When I say, “GO!” begin dribbling around the course.
  • Once you have reached the third dot, pass the ball to your first teammate in line.
  • After you have passed the ball, give the hockey stick to the next teammate in line and return to the back of the line.
  • When you hear, “Ratatat!” you must reverse the direction you are currently going in.
  • We will begin a new game once everyone has had a chance to go around the entire course.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Remind students they should be walking as they dribble around the course.
Game 2: Students dribble only to the first dot and pass to the first person in line on the other team. Then, join the back of the other team’s line.
Variation: To increase participation, create more courses and teams (depending on class size and classroom management).
Exit Ticket: In partners, students pass off the dribble to one another before putting their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Starting with a demonstration is crucial so students know where they are dribbling to.
  • Safety:
    • Dribblers should be mindful not to dribble into each other when getting to the next dot.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Why should you pass the ball to where you target will be and not where they are?
    • How could you keep yourself motivated to keep trying if passing off the dribble is a difficult skill for you to master?
