Objective: Backhand shot while standing still

Hockey Unit | Level 20

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to backhand shoot while standing still.

IMPORTANCE
A backhand shot while standing still is important because it is a shot that can be used when a teammate is close to the net or is coming from behind the net.

VOCABULARY
Backhand shot:
a shot taken from the backside of the blade.

When backhand shooting while standing still, it is important to:

1. Start with your body sideways to your target (dominant shoulder in the front).

2. Step towards your target as you push the ball forward with the back of the blade.

3. Step towards your target as you push the ball forward with the back of the blade.

4. Follow through towards your target.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into partners and will give each pair two cones. Spread out into the field and place your two cones 3 – 5 feet apart. When I say, "GO!" take turns with your partner shooting between the cones using a backhand shot. You should be no more than five feet away from the goal when shooting. After three minutes we will stop.

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 hockey stick per student
1 Wiffle Ball per student
1 flag per 2 students
1 hula-hoop
10 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing On Guard. Your goal is to backhand shoot while standing still into the goal while the guard is not looking.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams (guards and shooters) – using flags to tell who you are.
  • Before the game begins, the guards will line up behind a goal located on the edge of the field.
  • Shooters will begin in the center circle.
  • When I say, "GO!" shooters will try and steal one ball at a time and backhand shoot it past a guard.
  • The guards will try and block the shot.
  • If a ball makes it past a guard, the guard must retrieve it and put it back in the center hula-coop.
  • Shooters cannot shoot on the same guard twice.
  • After three minutes, guards and shooters will switch roles.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. A shooter cannot shoot on a goal if the guard has to leave and put a ball back in the center.
Game 2: Shooters can shoot on a goal if a guard has to leave and put a ball back in the center.
Game 3: Increase the number of goals so there are more goals than guards. Shooters can shoot on any goal and guards can move to protect their goals.
Game 4: Keep score. One point is awarded to every goal that is scored.
Exit Ticket: Students backhand shot while standing still to the teacher.
