TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to forehand shoot from the side.
IMPORTANCE
A forehand shot from the side is important because it increases your ability to shoot on goal from anywhere in the field. The more angles you are able to shoot from, the greater the chances for your shot to go in.
VOCABULARY
Forehand shot: a shot that is made off the right side of your body.
When forehand shooting from the side, it is important to:
1. Start with your body sideways to your target.
2. Bring the ball behind your back foot.
3. Step towards your target as you push the ball forward.
4. Follow through towards your target (do not lift the hockey stick above your knees).
PRACTICE
- I will divide the class into partners and will give each pair two cones. Spread out into the field and place your two cones 3 - 5 feet apart. When I say, "GO!" take turns with your partner shooting between the cones from a side angle. You should be no more than five feet away from the goal when shooting. After three minutes we will stop.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Horseshoes. Your goal is to make your way around the course and forehand shoot from the side at each cone.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two groups.
- Before the game begins, line up behind a short marker cone.
- When I say, "GO!" the person farthest to the right will make a shoot from the side on goal.
- Once the first person has shot, the person to the left of him/her will go, shooting from the side.
- After everyone in the horseshoe has shot, retrieve your ball and move one marker cone to the left.
- We will begin a new game after five minutes.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add a defender(s) inside the horseshoe.
Exit Ticket: Students forehand shoot from the side to the teacher to put their equipment away.

INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two teams – using flags to tell who you are.
- Decide which three students on your team will start on the field.
- The other remaining students will be spread out on either sideline with their hockey sticks.
- The teammates on the sidelines cannot go past the boundary cones.
- I will decide which team starts with the ball at the midline.
- When I say, "SWITCH!" the next three students must go onto the field.
- You cannot check, shove or push another teammate.
- Goalies are not allowed.
- Defending students must remain 3 – 5 feet away from their goal.
- A team earns double points if a complete pass is made to a teammate on the sidelines before a goal is scored.
- If a goal is scored, the play is over and the next three teammates start on the field.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Students forehand shoot from the side to the teacher to put their equipment away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- If not all students are participating, enforce a rule stating that teams cannot score unless each teammate has received a pass.

- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Loop-de-Loop II. Your goal is to make your way around the course and forehand shoot from the side on goal.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two teams.
- Before the game begins, line up single file behind your team's marker cone.
- I will begin as the goalie.
- When I say, "GO!" you must run around the cones in a loop pattern, then make a forehand shot from the side of the goal.
- When you have finished, retrieve your ball and head to the back of the line.

Game 2: Increase the number of loops students need to run before shooting on goal.
Game 3: The first team to make 10 goals gets one point.
Game 4: The teacher will put only one ball out at a time. Students have to race around the loop and whoever touches the ball first, gets to shoot on goal.
Game 5: The teacher will put only one ball out at a time. Students play 1 v 1 until a goal is scored.
Exit Ticket: Students forehand shoot from the side to the teacher to put their equipment away.
