Objective: Forehand pass to a moving target

Hockey Unit | Level 14

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to forehand pass to a moving target.

IMPORTANCE
Forehand passing to a moving target is important because it improves your accuracy and aim. The ability to forehand pass to your teammates increases the amount of shooting opportunities a team can take.

VOCABULARY
Forehand pass:
a pass that is made off the right side of your body.

When forehand passing to a moving target, it is important to:

1. Start with your body sideways to your target.

2. Bring the ball behind your back foot.

3. Step towards your target as you push the ball forward.

 

4. Pass the ball to where your target will be (not where they are).

TIME

EQUIPMENT
1 Wiffle Ball per 4 students
1 hockey stick per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Pass the Puck. Your goal is to forehand pass to a moving teammate to keep the Wiffle ball away from the person in the middle.  

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of four.
  • Ro Sham Bo to decide who in your team will start off as the middle person.
  • Spread out in the field and form a triangle with your teammates, standing 10 feet apart from one another.
  • The monkey will start in the middle of the triangle.
  • When I say, “GO!” teammates will begin passing the ball back and forth to one another while the middle person tries to intercept the passes.
  • If the middle person gets the ball, the teammate closest to the ball becomes him/her.
  • If the middle person does not get the ball after 20 passes, switch roles with another teammate.
  • Teammates can move to different areas in the field, but must remain in a triangle shape.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2:  Have students join different teams.
Exit Ticket: In partners, one student jogs to the midline and back receiving a forehand pass. Students take turns.

    • Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:

    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.

5 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Odd Man Out II. In this game, the teacher is the odd man out. Your goal is to forehand pass to the moving odd man out and hit his/her feet.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your hockey stick and tennis ball.
  • I will begin as the odd man.
  • When I say, “GO!” dribble around the field and forehand pass your ball at my feet.
  • Every time you hit my feet, you will receive a letter until you spell, “O-U-T!”
  • We will begin a new game once one student spells, “OUT!”
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2:  Select a student(s) to be the odd man out.
Exit Ticket: In partners, one student jogs to the midline and back receiving a forehand pass. Students take turns.

PUCK RELAY

10 Wiffle Balls
1 hockey stick per student
5 short cones
2 nets

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Puck Relay. Your goal is to forehand pass to a moving target to score as many goals as possible. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • When I say, "GO!" two people from each team will run out onto the field at a time.
  • The two teammates must each pass to each other before scoring.
  • Once the two teammates have scored, the next two teammates can go.
  • If the ball goes out-of-bounds at any point, the play is dead.
  • Once all ten balls from your team have been shot on goal, we will begin a new game.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Start off with no goalies.
Game 2: Once teams have shot all their balls, they may steal ones from the opposing team.
Exit Ticket: In partners, one student jogs to the midline and back receiving a forehand pass. Students take turns.
