Objective: Sun Salutation yoga sequence

Gymnastics Unit | Level 33

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn the Sun Salutation yoga sequence.

IMPORTANCE
The Sun Salutation yoga sequence is important because the poses lengthen and strengthen as well as flex and extend many of the main muscles of your body.

VOCABULARY
Yoga: a practice of physical postures, breath exercises, and meditation to physical and emotional well-being

When performing a Sun Salutation yoga sequence, it is important to remember these steps in order:

1. Tadasana (Mountain Pose): Stand with your palms touching at your heart. 

2. Urdhva Hastasana (Arms raise pose): Inhale while bringing your arms out to the side and join your palms above your head and look towards your hands while keeping your shoulders away from your ears.

3. Uttanasana (forward bend): Exhale as you release your arms and forward bend over your legs. Place your finger tips in line with your toes.

4. Ardha Uttanasana: Inhale as you life your head while bringing your hands to your shines while keeping your back flat.

5. Plank: Walk or jump your feet into a plank. Make sure your shoulders are stacked over your wrists.

6. Chaturanga: Exhale as you lower down while keeping your elbows against your body.

7. Cobra pose: Exhale as you bring the tops of your feet flat to the ground. Keep your shoulders away from your ears, extend your arms, and keep your legs straight.

8. Downward facing dog: Exhale as you push back keeping your head, arms and legs straight.

9. Uttanasana (forward bend): Step or walk your feet back to uttanasana and inhale as your raise up, bringing your arms over your head.

10. Tadasana (Mountain Pose): Exhale as stand in Tadasana.

 

PRACTICE

  1. Spread out onto the field so that you are at least an arm’s length away from the person standing next to you. We will begin the sun salutation sequence staying in each pose for about five deep breaths.

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Yoga Stations. Your goal is to practice the yoga skills and Sun Salutation. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, decide with your partner which station you would like to start in –standing and balancing station, shoulder station, or the Sun Salutation station.
  • In the standing and balancing station, you will be practicing standing and balancing poses, such as chair pose, warrior 1 pose, and twisting triangle pose.
  • In the shoulder station, you will be practicing poses that stretch the shoulders, such as eagle pose, crane and crow pose, reverse plank, and bridge pose.
  • In the Sun Salutation station, you will be going through the Sun Salutation yoga sequence.
  • Once you have practiced the skills at all stations, put together your own yoga sequence beginning and transitioning poses with the Sun Salutation.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Students can use dots to place their hands on.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate the sun salutation before lining up to leave class.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students this is not a competition – everyone should focus on their own progress.
    • Allow more advanced students to help others.
    • Remind students to stay in each pose for five deep breaths.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection: 
    • Name the skills in the yoga sequence you performed today.
    • What pose do you think you were the best at and why?

YOGA RACES III

EQUIPMENT
1 short cone per 4 students

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Yoga Race III. In this game, the objective is to win the yoga race by holding a position from the Sun Salutation until your number is called to race.  

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • Each team will stand shoulder-to-shoulder while facing the other team.
  • You will be paired and assigned a number with the student you are standing opposite to.
  • I will assign a shoulder yoga pose for everyone to hold.
  • When I say, “GO!” begin holding your yoga pose and listen for the number I call out.
  • If your number is called out, you will race to the font of the line to give me a high-five and race back.
  • The first student back to their spot wins a point for their team.
  • I will be calling numbers quickly so listen carefully!
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Choose poses in order from the sun salutation.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate the sun salutation before lining up to leave class.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students that an important part of yoga is to find a way to be both steady and comfortable in a pose and that may require holding a pose for a longer extended amount of time.
    • Choose a variety of standing and balancing poses to allow students to explore multiple poses.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.

MATCH YOGA POSES III

1 short cone per 4 students

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Match Yoga Poses III. In this game, the objective is to do the Sun Salutation and add and match the additional yoga poses.  

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into groups of four.
  • Ro Sham Bo with your group to decide who will start first.
  • When I say, “GO!” the first student will demonstrate the sun salutation then add an additional yoga pose.
  • The next students will repeat the sun salutation as well as the poses demonstrated by the previous students then add their own.
  • If a student forgets a pose in the routine, he/she will receive a letter (M-A-T-C-H) and go to the end of the line and try again. 
  • Continue adding poses until everyone in the group has contributed a pose.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate the sun salutation before lining up to leave class.

    • Consider marking stations with a dot or cone so that groups are spaced out properly.
    • Group students of the same athletic ability.
