Objective: Forward roll

Gymnastics Unit | Level 14

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to do a forward roll.

IMPORTANCE
Performing a forward roll is important because it the basis of more complex tumbling skills. The continuous form of motion allows you to engage a large number of muscle groups.

VOCABULARY
Forward roll:
 a gymnastics tumbling skill.

When performing a forward roll, it is important to:

1. Spread your feet as wide as you can and place your hands slightly in front of your feet.

2. Tuck your chin into your chest.

3. Push off your legs and roll onto your shoulders (your head should not touch the ground).

PRACTICE

  1. Line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder. When I say, “GO!” forward roll in the direction of the midline. Keep forward rolling until you reach the midline.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Forward Roll Stations. Your goal is to practice your forward roll skills and perfect your form.

  INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, decide which forward roll station you would like to start in – beginner, intermediate or advanced.
  • In beginner station, you will be practicing your forward roll form. Start with both feet inside the hula-hoop to begin your forward roll. To increase difficulty, have another teammate hold the hula-hoop vertically and try to do a forward roll through it.
  • In the intermediate station, you will practice doing a forward roll off of the balance beam.
  • In the advanced station, you will be challenged to do a backwards roll and straddle roll. Start with both feet on a dot.
  • You can move from one station to the next based on your comfort level.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate a forward roll before lining up to leave class.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students this is not a competition – everyone should focus on their own progress.
    • Pair up students of different ability levels so advanced students can help out beginners.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.

    • Who might help you improve your forward roll?

BILLY GOAT'S GRUFF

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Billy Goat’s Gruff. Your goal is to forward roll through the Billy Goat's bridge once you are tagged.  

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select a Billy Goat– using flags to tell who they are.  
  • When I say, “GO!” you must run anywhere inside the boundary cones and try to avoid being tagged by Billy Goat.
  • If you are tagged or go out-of-bounds, the only way to become freed, is if you do a forward roll through any of the four bridges.  
  • The Billy Goat cannot puppy guard a teepee.
  • The Billy Goat can only use a two-finger butterfly tag.
  • If a bridge falls down pick it back up.
  • We will begin a new game when I select a new Billy Goat.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase the number of Billy Goats.
Game 3: A tagged student must go through all four bridges to become freed.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate a forward roll before lining up to leave class.

BEACH FREEZE III

1 beach ball per 2 students
1 playground ball per 2 students

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Beach Freeze III. Your goal is to do a forward roll when you hear, "four on the floor" and see how many different ways you can freeze your body.   

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, I will give you either a beach ball or a playground ball.
  • Spread out into the field with your ball so that you are at least an arm’s distance away from the student next to you.
  • When I say, “GO!” begin kicking your ball anywhere within the boundary cones.  
  • When I say these numbers, you must freeze on that particular body part:
    • “One on your bum” (sit down with your bottom on the ground and freeze)
    • “Two on your shoe” (freeze on your tippy toes)
    • “Three on your knee” (freeze with both knees touching the ground)
    • “Four on the floor” (do a forward roll)
    • “Five staying alive” (freeze making a 70s dance pose from the song “Staying Alive”)
    • “Six pick up bricks” (freeze with your body bent over and hands touching the ground like you are picking up a heavy brick)
    • “Seven heaven” (freeze with your body pointed up to the sky)
    • “Eight straight” (freeze laying down with your stomach touching the ground in straight pencil position)
    • “Nine shrine” (freeze with your hands together pointed up making a shrine pose)
    • “Ten all over again”
