Objective: Egg roll

Gymnastics Unit | Level 6

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to perform an egg roll.

IMPORTANCE
Performing an egg roll is important because it helps you practice the technique of curling into a ball, which is necessary when doing a forward roll. Curving the spine and shoulders also helps your body stretch and prevents back injuries.

VOCABULARY
Egg roll:
 a tumbling skill in gymnastics.

When performing an egg roll, it is important to:

3. Keep your elbows in as you roll on your side.

PRACTICE

  1. Spread out onto the field and curl your body up into a ball. When I say, “GO!” egg roll side to side for ten seconds.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
Optional: 2 fuzzy balls
Optional: 1 flag per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Chicken Tag. Your goal is to egg roll when the chicken tags you.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select one student to start out as the chicken (tagger) and one student as the egg scrambler (un-freezer).
  • Before the game begins, spread out onto the field.
  • When I say, “GO!” the chicken will try and tag you.
  • The chicken may only use two-finger butterfly tags.
  • If you are tagged or go out-of-bounds, you will be turned into an egg.
  • When you are an egg, you must curl up into a ball and roll side to side.
  • You can only be freed if the egg scrambler comes by and cracks your egg open.
  • We will begin a new game when I select a new chicken and a new egg scrambler.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Have the teacher be the chicken the first game.
Game 2: Have students link arms or hands and run in pairs.
Game 3: Each time an egg is cracked, that student becomes a chicken. Play until everyone becomes a chicken.
Exit Ticket: Students demonstrate an egg roll before lining up to leave class.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Play on a half-field only.
    • Depending on class size, increase the number of chickens and egg scramblers.
    • For increased difficulty, have students wear flags.
    • Have chickens and egg scramblers wear flags to tell who they are, or have them carry fuzzy balls.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Call out colors students have to egg roll to (i.e. “Roll to the color blue.”)
Game 3: Have students sit with their bodies facing outwards. The student egg rolling in the middle will roll to a student on the outside of the parachute and tag them. If a student is tagged, they are the next one on the parachute.
