ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Objective: Self-refereeing

Frisbee Unit | Level 36

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to self-referee a Ultimate Frisbee game.

IMPORTANCE
Self-refereeing is important because in Ultimate Frisbee teams are responsible for resolving their own disputes and making their own calls. Ultimate Frisbee emphasizes the "Spirit of the Game", where sportsmanship, self-officiating and fair play are stressed. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between teams, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

VOCABULARY
Self-refereeing: when a game is officiated by the players.

CALLS
When self-refereeing a Ultimate Frisbee game, it is important to remember:

  1. Flip a Frisbee to determine which team will start with the Frisbee in the beginning of the game. The team that lands on heads will begin with the Frisbee.
  2. Call, "fast stall" if your opponent is counting a stall time too quickly.
  3. Call, "check feet" if you see your opponent out-of-bounds.
  4. Call, "Foul" if you are pushed, shoved, or the Frisbee is knocked out of your hands.
  5. Have a "do-over" if teams cannot agree on a call.

PRACTICE

  1. Students respond with the correct phrase for different scenarios that may arise during a game.

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
10 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 Frisbee
8 short cones per court (4 blue, 4 green)
1 flag per 2 students

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing King of the Court. In this game, the objective is to work with your team as you self-referee an Ultimate
Frisbee scrimmage game and be the winning team.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams. Each team will have 4 – 5 students.
  • I will decide who will start with the Frisbee first.
  • If you have the Frisbee:
    • You have 10 seconds to pass to anyone on your team.
    • You must keep one foot planted on the ground (pivot foot).
  • The defensive team is trying to knock down or intercept the Frisbee, but must stand five feet away from the student that is passing.
  • If the pass is incomplete (hits the ground) or goes out-of-bounds, the defensive team gets possession of the Frisbee where it landed (even if the defensive team hit it last).
  • If a team makes a catch in the end zone, they get one point.
  • Once a team scores, the opposing team starts with the Frisbee the next round.
  • Once a team has scored three points, they get to stay on the court and the losing team rotates to the next court.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Do not keep score.
Game 2: Play as indicated above. Keep score.
Exit Ticket: Teacher says different scenarios and students respond with the appropriate phrase.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • If teams are having difficulty making calls, assign a student as the “observer” to help resolve disputes.
    • Increase the number of courts or substitutes, based on class size.
    • To increase class participation, enforce a rule, in which teams can score after five passes.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Ultimate Frisbee emphasizes the "Spirit of the Game", where __________, __________, and __________ are stressed.
    • Did you find refereeing stressful.
    • Why or why not?
