ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Objective: Ultimate Frisbee scrimmage

Frisbee Unit | Level 35

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to play an Ultimate Frisbee scrimmage.

IMPORTANCE
Scrimmaging a game is important because it teaches the rules and procedures of a full game.

VOCABULARY
Scrimmage: a simulated game.

GROWFIT RULES

  • The GrowFit rules are a simple, modified version of Ultimate Frisbee. If a rule is not mentioned below we will not be following it.
  • Before the game begins, a person from each team will flip the Frisbee. Heads, or the top of the Frisbee, will determine which team will begin with the Frisbee.
  • Each team will begin in their end zone.
  • If a student has the Frisbee:
    • He/she can only pivot.
    • He/she can pass the Frisbee in any direction to a teammate.
    • He/she has 10 seconds to pass the Frisbee once a stall count begins by an opposing team member who is standing 10 feet away.
  • The defensive team gains possession of the Frisbee if the pass is thrown out-of-bounds, intercepted, dropped, or not passed within the stall time.
  • There is no contact in the game. A foul occurs when another player initiates contact. The play will resume with the offensive team’s possession of the Frisbee.
  • A point is scored when a team completes a pass in their opponent’s end zone.

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Challenger. In this game, the objective is to challenge the all-star team in a scrimmage.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of three.
  • I will choose one team to begin as the all-stars.
  • Everyone else will form a single-file line.
  • The all-stars will compete against the other teams until a challenging team wins.
  • Before the game begins, each team will start in their end zone. One person from each team will flip the Frisbee to determine which team will begin with the Frisbee.
  • When I say, “GO!” teams can begin playing.
  • The first team to score a goal wins the match and will stay on the field to challenge the next team in line.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. If the game is moving slowly, have a team win after they have completed six successful passes.
Exit Ticket: Students name two new rules they learned today.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Depending on class size, add additional fields using cones as goals.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • What is the most important rule in an ultimate frisbee game?
    • What rule did you find most difficult to follow and why?

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing End Zones. In this game, the objective is to scrimmage a game and score in one of the end zones.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • Before the game begins, one student from each team will flip the Frisbee. The team landing on heads will begin with the Frisbee.
  • If you have the Frisbee:
    • You have 10 seconds to pass to anyone on your team, except the student that passed to you.
    • You must keep one foot planted on the ground (pivot foot).
  • The defensive team is trying to knock down or intercept the Frisbee, but must stand five feet away from the student that is passing.
  • If the pass is incomplete (hits the ground) or goes out-of-bounds, the defensive team gets possession of the Frisbee where it landed (even if the defensive team hit it last).
  • Once a team scores, the opposing team starts with the Frisbee the next round.
  • Teams will put a short cone into each end zone they make a complete pass into.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Students name two new rules they learned today.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Increase the number of courts or substitutes, based on class size.
    • To decrease difficulty, a team can score a point if they are able to throw the Frisbee into the end zone, instead of making a complete pass.
    • To increase class participation, enforce a rule, in which teams can score after five passes.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.

    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
