Objective: Throw a lead pass within a stall time

Frisbee Unit | Level 33

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to throw a lead pass within a stall time.

IMPORTANCE
Throwing a lead pass within a stall time is important to help your team move the Frisbee down the field and into your opponent's end zone in the correct amount of time.

VOCABULARY
Lead pass: a pass thrown to where a teammate is moving.
Stall time: the time that a player has to throw the Frisbee.

When throwing a lead pass within a stall time, it is important to:

1. Once you receive the Frisbee, decide which throw you will use (forehand, backhand, or hammer throw).

2. You will have 10 seconds to throw the Frisbee once your opponent begins a stall count ((stall 1..stall 2... etc)

3. Throw the Frisbee where your teammate will be (not where they are).

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into groups of three. With your group, decide who be the handler, cutter, and defender. When I say, "GO!" the handler will throw a lead pass as the defender defends the cutter. Switch roles after each turn.

WORLD CUP FRISBEE

TIME
20-30 minutes

EQUIPMENT
1 Frisbee
1 flag per 2 students
13 cones (5 orange, 4 green and 4 blue)

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing World Cup Frisbee. In this game, the goal is to throw a lead pass within a stall time to help your team score a goal.  

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of three.  
  • Before the game begins, decide with your team which country you will represent.
  • When I say, “GO!” teams will begin competing against each other to score a goal.
  • If the Frisbee is thrown kicked out-of-bounds or a goal is made, the teacher will throw the Frisbee back into the game. 
  • A goal counts if the Frisbee lands between or past the two cones.
  • Teams cannot block the Frisbee inside the goal.
  • Take a seat on the sidelines if your team scores a goal and wait to play in the next round.
  • The last two teams competing will not advance to the next round and will sit the rest of the game on the sidelines.
  • The winner of the World Cup will be the last team remaining in the final round.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Variation: If the game is moving slowly, add a second Frisbee.
Exit Ticket: Students throw a lead pass to a partner before putting the Frisbee away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Increase the number of courts or substitutes, based on class size.    
    • To increase class participation, enforce a rule, in which teams can score after five passes. 
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:

4 WAY FRISBEE

TIME
15-25 minutes

EQUIPMENT
1 Frisbee
8 tall cones
1 flag per 2 students

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing 4 Way Frisbee. In this game, the objective is to throw a lead pass within a stall time in order to help your team score as many points as possible.   

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • I will decide who will start with the Frisbee first.
  • If you have the Frisbee:
    • You can pass it to anyone on your team, except the person that passed it to you.
    • You must keep one foot planted on the ground (pivot foot).
  • The defensive team is trying to knock down or intercept the Frisbee, but must stand three feet away from the student that is passing.
  • If the pass is incomplete (hits the ground) or goes out-of-bounds, the defensive team gets possession of the Frisbee where it landed (even if the defensive team hit it last).
  • A team scores a point if they are able to throw the Frisbee into a goal (two tall cones).
  • Once a team scores, the opposing team starts with the Frisbee the next round.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Teams can score in any goal.
Game 2: Teams cannot score in the same goal back-to-back.
Game 3: Students can only score a point if the Frisbee is caught in the goal.
Exit Ticket: Students throw a lead pass to a partner before putting the Frisbee away.

    • Increase or decrease the size of the goals, based on a class’s athletic ability.
    • To increase class participation, enforce a rule, in which teams can score after five passes.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Ultimate Frisbee. Your goal is to throw a lead pass within a stall time to try and work with your team to score as many points as possible.   

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams. 
  • I will decide who will start with the Frisbee first.
  • If you have the Frisbee:
    • You can pass it to anyone on your team, except the student that passed it to you.
    • You must keep one foot planted on the ground (pivot foot).
  • The defensive team is trying to knock down or intercept the Frisbee, but must stand three feet away from the student that is passing.
  • If the pass is incomplete (hits the ground) or goes out-of-bounds, the defensive team gets possession of the Frisbee where it landed (even if the defensive team hit it last).
  • If your team makes a catch in the end zone, you get one point.
  • Once a team scores, the opposing team starts with the Frisbee the next round.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Do not keep score.
Game 2: Play as indicated above. Keep score.
