TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to catch a foam ring.
IMPORTANCE
Catching a foam ring is important because it improves hand-eye coordination and timing. Catching is necessary in Frisbee, as well as other sports like baseball, softball, football, basketball, etc.
VOCABULARY
Palm: the somewhat concave part of the human hand between the bases of the fingers and the wrist or the corresponding part of the forefoot of a lower mammal.
When catching a foam ring, it is important to:
1. Face the thrower and keep your eyes on the ring.
2. Hold your arms out in front of you with your palms facing each other.
3. Clamp down on the ring with both hands.
PRACTICE
- I will divide the class into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the foam ring first. One teammate will stand on the baseline and the other will stand 3 – 5 feet away from him/her. When I say, “GO!” toss and catch the foam ring back and forth.
SPUD II
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
6-20 students per game
EQUIPMENT
10 short cones
1 foam ring
STORYLINE
Today we are playing SPUD II. In this game, your goal is to catch a foam ring and get as few letters (S-P-U-D) as possible.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will start with the foam ring in the center zone.
- Before the game begins, you will circle up around the center zone.
- I will throw the foam ring up and call out a name.
- If your name is called, catch the foam ring and yell, “SPUD!”
- If your name is not called, run as far away as possible.
- When “SPUD!” is called, everyone must freeze.
- The catcher can take up to five steps (not jumps) towards the closest student and try to hit him/her below the shoulders with the foam ring.
- If the student catches the foam ring or it bounces first, the thrower receives a letter and starts with the foam ring in the center zone the next round.
- If a student is hit, he/she receives a letter and starts with the foam ring in the center zone next round.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. If a name has been called already, it cannot be called again until all students have had a chance to throw.
Game 2: Teacher calls out a different direction (forward, backward, sideways) for students to run as the foam ring is tossed in the air.
Game 3: Give each student a number and call out numbers instead of names.
Exit Ticket: Students catch a foam ring with a partner once before putting the foam ring away.
