Objective: Backhand throw a foam ring

Frisbee Unit | Level 3

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to backhand throw a foam ring.

IMPORTANCE
Backhand throwing a foam ring is important because it is the most commonly used throw in Frisbee. Learning this throwing technique allows you to pass during a game.

VOCABULARY
Backhand:
a throw with the back of the hand facing in the direction of the stroke, typically starting with the arm crossing the body.

When backhand throwing a foam ring, it is important to:

1. Hold the side of the ring with your thumb on top.

2. Stand sideways to your target and bring the ring across your body.

3. Step with your front foot while you throw.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the foam ring first. One teammate will stand on the baseline and the other will stand 3 – 5 feet away from him/her. When I say, “GO!” backhand throw and catch the foam ring back and forth.

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
1 hula-hoop
1 foam ring per 2 students
20 dots
Optional: 20 tall cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Bulls-Eye. Your goal is to try and backhand throw a foam ring into the bulls-eye (hula-hoop) from any dot.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two.
  • Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the foam ring first.
  • When I say, "GO!" try and backhand throw your foam ring into the bulls-eye from any dot.
  • Once you have thrown, your teammate will retrieve the foam ring and take a turn.
  • If both teammates make it into the bulls-eye from the dot, then they get to pick up and keep the dot.
  • We will begin a new game once there are no more dots on the field.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. See how many dots your team can collect.
Game 2: Once you pick up a dot, your team is allowed to put the dot wherever you choose.
Game 3: Call out different colors that teams must try and throw from.
Variation: Put a tall cone on each dot. Students must try and aim their foam ring to land on the tall cones.
Exit Ticket: Students throw a foam ring backhand into the equipment bag to put it away.

ATTACK OF THE CLONES

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
5 short cones
24 fuzzy balls
2 hula-hoops
1 foam ring per 2 students

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Attack of The Clones. In this game, you are in a galaxy far away and your team is under attack. Your goal is to backhand throw a foam ring to try to get all the opposing team members down.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • I will select one student on each team to be the Jedi knight.
  • When I say, “GO!” begin backhand throwing foam rings and/or fuzzy balls at the opposing team.
  • If you are hit with a fuzzy ball (shoulders and below) or a foam ring (knees and below), you must go down within three seconds in the same place you were hit.
  • The only way to get back up, is if the Jedi knight throws you a fuzzy ball or a foam ring and you catch it.
  • When the Jedi knights are in their team’s hula-hoop, they are safe.
  • If the Jedi knight leaves the hula-hoop and gets hit, he/she is down.
  • We will begin a new game when there is one team left.
  • New Jedi knights will be chosen each game.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add spies. Spies can go onto the other team’s side and steal fuzzy balls but can also be hit.
Exit Ticket: Students throw a foam ring backhand into the equipment bag to put it away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Depending on class size, select two students from each team to be the Jedi knights.
    • Remind students to be honest about getting hit. Make a rule where phrases like, “I got you!” or “You’re down!” are not allowed.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.

    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.

TARGET FRISBEE

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 small parachute
1 foam ring per 4 students
44 short cones (10 red, 10 yellow, 10 blue, 10 green, 4 orange)
Optional: 20 tall cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Target Frisbee. Your goal is to try and backhand throw a foam ring onto the parachute and earn a color marker cone.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of four.
  • Before the game begins, line up behind your team's marker cone.
  • When I say, "GO!" the first teammate will backhand throw their team’s foam ring onto the parachute.
  • If your foam ring lands on a color - take that color marker cone, retrieve your ring and return to the back of your team’s line.
  • We will begin a new game when there are no more short cones.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Have students get two or three (based on class size) short cones of each color.
Game 3: If a team lands on a color they already have, they can ‘gift’ it to another team that does not have that color.
Game 4: Call out colors students must try and throw to.
Variation: Distribute tall cones evenly on the parachute. If students land their foam ring on a tall cone, they get to keep it.
