Objective: Underhand throw a foam ring

Frisbee Unit | Level 2

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to underhand throw a foam ring.

IMPORTANCE
Underhand throwing a foam ring is important because it is the first step in learning how to throw a Frisbee. Learning the underhand throw is essential if you want a more powerful throw.

VOCABULARY
Underhand throw:
a throw made with the arm or hand below shoulder level

When underhand throwing a foam ring, it is important to:

1. Hold the side of the ring with your thumb on top.

2. Face your target and bring your throwing arm back.

3. Step with your opposite foot while your throwing arm swings forward.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the foam ring first. One teammate will stand on the baseline and the other will stand 3 – 5 feet away from him/her. When I say, “GO!” underhand throw and catch the foam ring back and forth.

1 short cone per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Toss Back. Your goal is to underhand throw a foam ring to your teammate to see how many complete passes you can make while the gap gets bigger and bigger.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two.
  • Before the game begins, Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start on the baseline with the foam ring. The other teammate will start five feet away.   
  • When I say, “GO!” begin underhand throwing back and forth with your teammate.
  • When both teammates have caught the foam ring, the teammate facing the baseline will take one step back with his/her marker cone.
  • If you drop the foam ring at any point, move your marker cone forward one step.
  • See how far you can pass the foam ring and how many complete passes you can make in a row.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Have students switch teammates.
Exit Ticket: Students throw a foam ring underhand into the equipment bag to put it away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Divide students into teams based on athletic ability.
    • Remind students to be aware of other teams around them passing foam rings.
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing State Fair. In this game, you are attendees of the State Fair and you are very hungry for some fried onion rings (foam rings). Your goal is to underhand throw an onion ring to avoid being tagged by the animals in the petting zoo that want to steal your food.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select three animals (taggers) and everyone else will be an attendee of the State Fair.  
  • Animals will wear green flags and decide which petting zoo animal they are.
  • I will select three attendees to hold an onion ring.
  • Before the game begins, spread out into the field.
  • When I say, “GO!” animals will try and tag the attendees holding an onion ring.
  • If an attendee has an onion ring, he/she has 10 seconds to underhand throw to another attendee.
  • Attendees can only have one onion ring at a time.
  • If an animal tags an attendee, they must switch roles.
  • The animal must be wearing the green flag before tagging any attendees.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Students throw a foam ring underhand into the equipment bag to put it away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Play only on half of the field.
    • Depending on class size, increase the number of attendees or animals.
    • If students are not passing the onion rings to different students, have a ‘no pass back’ rule.

MEMORY

24 tall cones
20 fuzzy balls
1 foam ring per 2 students
4 short cones
2 hula-hoops

STORYLINE
Today we are playing a Memory. Your goal is to unerhand throw a foam ring to your teammate after you have guessed which tall cone has a fuzzy ball underneath it.  

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into four teams.
  • Before the game begins, line up single file behind your team's marker cone.
  • When I say, "GO!" the first person in line will run to the grid and lift up a tall cone.
  • If there is a fuzzy ball underneath the cone, pick it up and trade it with a foam ring.
  • Then, run back to your team and underhand throw the foam ring to the next teammate before returning to the back of the line.
  • If there is not a fuzzy ball underneath the tall cone you picked up, return back to your team and high-five the next teammate in line.
  • We will begin a new game once all the foam rings have been collected.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Only put out the same number of fuzzy balls as foam rings.
Game 2: To increase difficulty, decrease the number of fuzzy balls. Do not tell the students how many fuzzy balls are out in the grid. 
Game 3: If teammates do not catch the foam ring, they must bring it back to the hula-hoop.
Game 4: Give a color to each team. Only when students find their team’s color fuzzy ball can they can trade it in for a foam ring.
Exit Ticket: Students throw a foam ring underhand into the equipment bag to put it away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Have the entire class face backwards while you put the fuzzy balls underneath the tall cones. (You can have them do a physical activity while waiting – push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, squats, etc.)  
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
