Objective: Fast break offense

Basketball Unit | Level 34

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to fast break offense.

IMPORTANCE
Fast break offense is important because it allows your team to take advantage of your opponent's transition period as they begin to play defense.

VOCABULARY
Fast Break Offense:
passing and running up the court to develop a quick scoring attack.

When fast breaking to offensive, it is important to:

3. Get wide and ready for a pass.

4. Signal to your teammate that you are open.

PRACTICE

  1. Have students get into groups of three. In your groups, decide who will dribble the ball, who will receive the first pass and who will shoot. When I say, "GO!" groups, one at a time, will run down the court. The student dribbling the ball will pass to the student ready to receive. Once the student catches the pass, he/she will pass the ball to the third student who will then shoot. Once your group has shot, rebound the ball and get back in line.
  2. Repeat as many times as necessary.

TIME
15-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
3-20 students per basket

EQUIPMENT
5 basketballs per game

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Triple Play V. In this game, the objective is to fast break to offense once you rebound the shot.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select three students to start at positions #1, #2 and #3. Everyone else will line up single file behind the student in position #1.
  • When I say, "GO!" student #1 will dribble to student #2.
  • Student #2 will make a shot.
  • Student #3 will fast break to offense by 1) rebounding the shot, 2) dribbling it back up to the next student in line at position #1, and 3) get in the back of the line.
  • After the shot is made, student #1 will move to #2 and student #2 will move to #3.
  • The next student in line can go as soon as the shot is made.
  • The rotation will continue until all students have been at every position.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Have students #1 and #3 use their non-dominant hand while dribbling.
Exit Ticket: Teams must grab a rebound, make an outlet pass, run the fast break and shoot before putting the ball away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students that the point of this game is to practice their drop step technique so all passes made should be controlled.
  • ELL Accommodations
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Model skills in a small group.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
  • Reflection
    • Describe in detail the observations you made to decide that a fast break was the best offensive move?

FULL COURT LAYUPS

TIME
20-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
2-15 students per basket

EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per 2 students

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Full Court Layups. Your goal is to run up the court to start the fast break offense and shoot a layup.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • Before the game begins, each team must line up behind their end line.
  • When I say, "GO!" the first person in line will dribble across the court and make a right-handed layup in the opposing team's basket.
  • If you make the layup or not, retrieve your ball and head to the back of your line.
  • The next student in line cannot go until you have shot on the basket.
  • We will begin a new game once everyone on either team has made a layup.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add a defender. Have the first person in line come out and defend when the opposing team is making a shot. The defender cannot steal the ball or block the shot – they are used only to add pressure to the opponent.
Game 3: Keep score. At the end of five minutes count how many baskets each team made.
Exit Ticket: Teams must grab a rebound, make an outlet pass, run the fast break and shoot before putting the ball away.

  • All games will be played on a half-court.
  • Ro Sham Bo to decide which team will start with the ball at the half-court line.
  • Every successful shot inside the arc is awarded one point, while every successful shot behind the arc is awarded two points.
  • If the defense gains possession of the ball within the arc, by a steal, a block or a rebound, the team must fast break and move the ball behind the arc before taking a shot.
  • After a shot is made, the play restarts with a student from the non-scoring team taking the ball directly under the basket and then dribbling or passing it to a point behind the arc. The defense is not allowed to play, block or charge for the ball inside the arc.
  • There is no pushing or shoving. Any fouls may result in loss of play for the student.
