TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
10 per basket

EQUIPMENT
2 basketballs
5 short cones

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Court Masters. In this game, the objective is to use a pump fake to shoot a basket before your opponent does.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two.
  • I will select the first two teams to start off on the court – these are the court masters.
  • Before the game begins, the court masters stand at the free throw line.
  • Everyone else will form a line at the baseline or end line with their partner.
  • When I say, "GO!" the first team in line will roll a ball out to the court masters.
  • Once the court masters have received the ball, the game is open to a two-on-two play.
  • If the court masters score first they stay on the court.
  • If the opposing team scores first, they become the new court masters and the losing team goes to the end of the line at the opposing base or end line.

Exit Ticket: Students perform a pump fake before putting the ball away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach
    • This game is intended to be played on a half-court. If your class size is smaller, play with one whole group.
    • Give students the option to be in a competitive or non-competitive group.
  • ELL Accommodations
    • Pair new student with more advanced student of same language for instructions.
    • Post skills and instructions in picture format for students to reference.
  • SpEd Accommodation
    • Give directions and demonstrations one-on-one in small groups.
    • Allow students to write, sign, or draw reflections instead of answering orally when appropriate
  • Reflection
    • How did you use the pump fake to give yourself an advantage as an offensive player?
    • Did you set a goal for your next step or move after your "pump fake"? If so what was it? If not, how could planning your next move improve your basketball game?

  • If both teammates make the shot from the dot, then you get to pick up and keep the dot.
  • We will begin a new game once there are no more dots on the court.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. See how many dots your team can collect.

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
5-20 per basket

EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per 5 students
5 short cones
1 flag per 2 students

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing 3 v 2 Scrimmage. In this game, the objective is to use a pump fake to score more baskets than your opponent.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two or three using flags to tell who they are.
  • All games will be played on a half-court.
  • Ro Sham Bo to decide which team will start with the ball at the half-court line.
  • Every successful shot inside the arc is awarded one point, while every successful shot behind the arc is awarded two points.
  • If the defense gains possession of the ball within the arc, by a steal, a block or a rebound, the team must move the ball behind the arc before taking a shot.
  • After shot is made, the play restarts with a student from the non-scoring team taking the ball directly under the basket and then dribbling or passing it to a point behind the arc. The defense is not allowed to play, block or charge for the ball inside the arc.
  • There is no pushing or shoving. Any fouls may result in loss of play for the student.
  • We will begin a new game and rotate teams at the end of 10 minutes.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Rotate teams after 10 minutes.
Exit Ticket: Students perform a pump fake before putting the ball away.
