ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Objective: Dribble between the legs

Basketball Unit | Level 29

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to dribble between the legs.

IMPORTANCE
Dribbling between the legs is important because it is an effective and often times necessary tool when facing extreme pressure from a defender. You use your body as a natural shield against the defender allowing you to change both direction and speed, while insuring that the ball is being protected.

VOCABULARY
Dribble: to bounce an object continuously without stop or pause.

When dribbling between the legs, it is important to:

1. Dribble the ball in front and slightly to the side of your body.

2.png

2. Touch the ball with your fingertips (not your palm).

3.png

3. Keep your head up.

4.png

4. Keep the ball low (between waist and knees).

5.png

5. Alternate between your right and left hand with the ball bouncing between your legs.

PRACTICE

  1. Spread out around the court with your ball. When I say, “GO!” practice dribbling between your legs. When I say, “STOP!” place your ball between your feet.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

TIME
15-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
15-20 students per basket

EQUIPMENT
5 basketballs per group

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Triple Play IV. In this game, the objective is to dribble between your legs and make a shot on the basket.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select three students to start at positions #1, #2 and #3. Everyone else will line up single file behind the student in position #1.
  • When I say, "GO!" student #1 will dribble between their legs to student #2.
  • Student #2 will make a shot on the basket without their feet leaving the ground.
  • Student #3 will rebound the shot and dribble between their legs back up to the next student in line at position #1.
  • After the shot is made, student #1 will move to #2 and student #2 will move to #3.
  • The next student in line can go as soon as the shot is made.
  • The rotation will continue until all students have been at every position.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Have students at position #2 make a shot without lifting their legs from the ground.
Game 3: Have students at position #2 do a layup.
Exit Ticket: Students perform a between the legs dribble before putting the ball away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach
    • Remind students this is a fast paced game. Do not pass the ball until the receiver is paying attention to avoid any injuries.
  • ELL Accommodations
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Model skills in a small group.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
  • Reflection
    • How did you ensure the ball was protected before attempting to dribble between the legs?
    • How did you encourage a classmate or yourself if this skill was difficult?

TIME
20-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
2-15 students per basket

EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per 2 students

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Full Court Layups II. In this game, the objective is to dribble between your legs down the court and make a shot on the basket.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • Before the game begins, each team must line up behind their end line.
  • When I say, "GO!" the first person in line will dribble between their legs across the court and make a right handed layup in the opposing team's basket.
  • If you make the lay up or not, retrieve your ball and head to the back of your line.
  • The next student in line cannot go until you have shot on the basket.
  • We will begin a new game once everyone on either team has made a layup.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add a defender. Have the first person in line come out and defend when the opposing team is making a shot. The defender cannot steal the ball or block the shot – they are used only to add pressure to the opponent.
Game 3: Keep score. At the end of five minutes count how many baskets each team made.
Exit Ticket: Students perform a between the legs dribble before putting the ball away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach
    • Start from half-court, instead of full court, if students are having difficulty making the layup.
  • ELL Accommodations
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.

    • How did you encourage a classmate or yourself if this skill was difficult?

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select one student to begin as the dribbler.
  • He/she will begin at the baseline.
  • Everyone else will be a defender.
  • Defenders cannot move their feet, hands or arms.
  • Before the game begins, defenders must spread out an equal distance from the baseline to the end line.
  • When I say, “GO!” the dribbler must dribble in a weaving pattern from the baseline to the end line while dribbling between their legs.
  • The dribbler cannot go outside the boundary cones.
  • Once the dribbler makes it to the half-way point, the next defender closest to the baseline will begin as the dribbler.
  • When the dribbler gets to the end line, he/she becomes the last defender and everyone moves down.
  • We will begin a new game when everyone has a chance to be a dribbler.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Defenders cannot steal, grab or knock the ball away from the dribblers.
Game 2: Defenders can move their arms, but cannot move their feet.
