Objective: Bounce pass at a target

Basketball Unit | Level 12

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to bounce pass at a target.

IMPORTANCE
Bounce passing at a target is important because it is used when you and your teammate are between a defender. Bounce passing makes it harder for a defender to intercept the ball.

VOCABULARY
Bounce pass:
moving the ball from one player to another by bouncing the ball.

When bounce passing at a target, it is important to:

1.png

2.png

2. Take a step towards your target when passing.

3.png

3. Extend your arms as you pass.

4.png

4. Palms and fingers are pointed out after the pass.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide you into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the basketball first. Line up on the baseline with your ball between your feet and 3 – 5 feet between your teammate. When I say, “GO!” bounce pass your ball back and forth 10 times.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Alcatraz IV. In this game, we are stuck on Alcatraz Island and need to get back to shore! Your goal is to help your team swim back to shore safely by using the buoy (basketball) to bounce pass to your teammate.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of four.
  • Before the game begins, Ro Sham Bo to decide which teammate will start with the ball first.
  • The rest of you will go out in the ocean with your life raft (dot) set three feet away from each other.
  • When I say, “GO!” the first student will bounce pass the buoy to the next student in line.
  • Once you pass the buoy, you must pick up your life raft and swim (run) to the end of your line.
  • Do not spread your team’s life raft out too far because if a teammate misses the buoy, your team must start back on Alcatraz.
  • See how many passes it takes you to get from Alcatraz to the shore.
  • We will begin a new game once all teams have made it to the shore.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Have each student create their own Eiffel Tower around the last hula-hoop.
Game 2: Students create one big Eiffel Tower. See how high the tower can get before it falls over.
Exit Ticket: Students bounce pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • To increase participation and limit wait time, put the hula-hoops closer together.
    • Remind students they should be dribbling at all times.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two groups.
  • The students at the baseline will start with the orange first.
  • When I say, “GO!” bounce pass the orange at the partner across from you.
  • If your orange falls into the juicer, quickly retrieve it before it is all squeezed out of orange juice.
  • Once the orange is bounce passed through juicer, the other side gets a chance to bounce pass it.
  • The juicer will widen at the beginning of each game.
  • You must stay behind the boundary when you are passing or catching.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Students have to make three bounce passes before widening the juicer.
Game 2: Students have to make five complete bounce passes before widening the juicer.
Game 3: Have students rotate each bounce pass – students at the baseline move either one student to the right or left.
Game 4: Elimination round. If your ball drops in the juicer, you are eliminated. You may practice bounce passing with your partner somewhere on the court.
Exit Ticket: Students bounce pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.
