Objective: Bounce pass

Basketball Unit | Level 10

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to bounce pass.

IMPORTANCE
Bounce passing is important because it is used when there is a defender between you and your teammate. Using a bounce pass makes it harder for the defender to intercept the ball.

VOCABULARY
Bounce pass:
moving the ball from one player to another by bouncing the ball.

When bounce passing, it is important to:

1.png

1. Hold the ball in front of your chest with both hands.

2.png

2. Take a step towards your target when passing.

3.png

3. Extend your arms as you pass.

4.png

4. Palms and fingers are pointed out after the pass.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide you into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the basketball first. Line up on the baseline with your ball between your feet and 3 – 5 feet between your teammate. When I say, “GO!” bounce pass your ball back and forth 10 times.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

QUICKSAND III

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
5-20 students per game

EQUIPMENT
6 hula-hoops
10 basketballs
10 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Quicksand III. In this game, we are caught in quicksand and in need of help! Your goal is to rescue the students stuck in quicksand (hula-hoop) by bounce passing a basketball to them.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select two students to stand in the middle island.
  • I will select two students to be defenders.
  • The rest of you will be stuck in one of the quicksand spots in the desert.
  • When I say, “GO!” the students in the middle will bounce pass the ball to any student stuck in the quicksand.
  • If you catch a ball, you are free and can join the middle island to help save others.
  • You can only catch a ball while inside the quicksand.
  • You cannot leave your quicksand area.
  • If the ball is not caught, you must retrieve it.
  • You can only make a pass while in the middle island.
  • We will begin a new game once everyone is freed from the quicksand.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the number of defenders based on athletic ability of the class.
Game 3: If a ball is thrown and is not caught, it is taken away from the game.
Game 4: Allow students in quicksand to move to other islands, but they can be tagged by defenders. If they are tagged they become defenders.
Exit Ticket: Students bounce pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • For larger classes, allow students to have one foot inside quicksand and one foot out.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Model skills in a small group.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
  • Reflection:
    • What was the hardest part about learning to bounce pass?
    • What might you do to get better at bounce passing?
