Objective: Bounce and catch a ball at the waist with two hands

Basketball Unit | Level 1

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to bounce and catch a ball at the waist with two hands.

IMPORTANCE
Bouncing and catching a ball at the waist with two hands is important because it improves your ball control skills and your hand-eye coordination.

VOCABULARY
Bounce: a rebound of an object off of the floor or any surface.
Catch: receive an object that is moving through the air with your hands.  

When bouncing and catching a ball at the waist with two hands, it is important to:

1. Hold the ball with two hands.

2. Point your hands down and out after you bounce the ball.

3. Catch a ball with both hands.

PRACTICE

  1. Line up on the baseline with your ball between your feet. When I say, “GO!” bounce and catch your ball with both hands 10 times. When I say, “STOP!” put your ball between your feet.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

PUMPKIN PATCH

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
5-20 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per student
20 dots (equal amounts of each color)

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Pumpkin Patch. In this game, we are bouncing our pumpkins (basketballs) on all the different colors in the pumpkin patch. Your goal is to bounce and catch your pumpkin at your waist using two hands following the color pattern.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams. You will either stand on the baseline or the end line.
  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder with your pumpkin between your feet.   
  • I will call out a pattern before each round (e.g., “Green, Blue, Red”).
  • When I say, “GO!” you must:
    • Run to the first color called in the pattern
    • Bounce and catch your ball on that dot
    • Continue to go to the rest of the colors called out in the pattern
  • If you get to a dot at the same time as another student, Ro Sham Bo to decide who goes first.
  • When you finish the pattern, line back up in your line.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Start with two colors in the pattern.
Game 2: Add more colors to the pattern.
Game 3: Add additional challenges along with the pattern. (You have to high-five someone at each dot.)
Exit Ticket: Students bounce and catch a ball at the waist with two hands before putting the ball away.

    • Remind students this is not a race between teams.

    • Pair new student with more advanced student of same language for instructions.

MONSTERS INC

3 hula-hoops
3 dots
5 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Monsters, Inc. In this game, Randall, the purple lizard monster, is looking for children to hide in his closet. Your goal is to push the button (dot) by bouncing and catching a ball at the waist with two hands to help free the children hidden in the closet.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will begin as Randall, the purple lizard monster.
  • When I say, "GO!" you must run around the half-court without getting tagged.
  • If you get tagged, you must go into one of the closet doors (hula-hoop).
  • The only way for you to escape is for another student to push the button of the closet door. 
  • Only one student can be freed at a time from the closet.
  • You cannot be tagged while pushing the button.
  • We will begin a new game when I select another monster to help me.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the number of monsters based on class size.
Game 3: Increase the number of bounces it takes for someone to be freed.
Exit Ticket: Students bounce and catch a ball at the waist with two hands before putting the ball away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Increase the size of the court based on class size.
    • If the monsters are puppy guarding, have them stand three feet away from the closets.

STOP 'N GO

EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Stop 'N Go. Your goal is to bounce and catch your basketball at your waist with two hands as you make your way to the other side of the court to reach the traffic light. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, you must line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder with your basketball between your feet.
  • When I say, “Green light!” bounce, catch and walk forward.
  • When I say, “Red light!” your feet, body and ball must stop moving.
 

Game 1: Students walk, bounce and catch on green light.
Game 2: Incorporate a “blue light” to go backwards, an “orange light” to go sideways and a “purple light” for dance party. 
Exit Ticket: Students bounce and catch a ball at the waist with two hands before putting the ball away.

    • Remind students that this is not necessarily a race.  It is important to go at a pace that is personally challenging, but allows you the ability to stop quickly.
