Objective: Block a fuzzy ball using a backhand technique with a paddle

Badminton Unit | Level 10

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to block a fuzzy ball using a backhand technique with a paddle.

IMPORTANCE
Blocking a fuzzy ball using a backhand technique with a paddle is important because it teaches you the proper backhand grip for holding the paddle when returning a hit ball.

VOCABULARY
Dominant hand:
the hand with the most control (often, the one used most).
Non-Dominant hand: the hand with the least control (often, the one used least).
Pointer finger: index finger or the closest finger to your thumb.

When blocking a fuzzy ball using a backhand technique with a paddle, it is important to:

1. Hold the paddle in your non-dominant hand with the paddle facing sideways.

2. Using your dominant hand, grab the handle like you are shaking hands.

3. Pinch the handle with your thumb and pointer finger.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will block with the paddle first. Spread out onto the field and stand 3 – 5 feet away from one another. When I say, “GO!” one teammate will toss the fuzzy ball and the other will block with the paddle. Switch roles after 10 tosses.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

ARCTIC SLIDERS

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game

EQUIPMENT
11 short cones
24 fuzzy balls
1 paddle per 2 students
Optional: 1 tall cone per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Arctic Sliders. In this game, we are in the Arctic Kingdom (field) and the Blizzard Wizard (thrower) is looking to turn all the Sneaky Sliders to ice by hitting them with magic snowballs (fuzzy balls)! Your goal is to block the magic snowballs using a backhand technique with a shield (paddle) and get to the other side of the Arctic Kingdom.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two. Each team will get a shield.
  • Before the game begins, the Sneaky Sliders must line up on the baseline and face the Blizzard Wizard.
  • When I say, “GO!” you have to slide to the other side of the Arctic Kingdom without being hit by a magic snowball.
  • Your teammate can protect you by using the shield.
  • If you or your teammate are hit with a magic snowball, you both are frozen for the rest of the round.
  • Another Artic Slider may unfreeze you by tagging you on the shoulder during the next round.
  • Rotate with your teammate who has the shield each round.
  • We will begin a new round when all the Artic Sliders reach the other side of the kingdom or are frozen.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Students move constantly from one side of the field to the other (without a signal).
Game 3: Students pickup snow cones (tall cones), one at a time, from an end zone. When all snow cones have been gathered, the class has defeated the Blizzard Wizard!
Game 4: One student is chosen as the “Golden Child”, that is kept a secret from the Blizzard Wizard. Students must protect him/her from being hit.
Exit Ticket: Students block a fuzzy ball thrown by teacher with their paddle before putting their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • If there are too many students running at a time, consider dividing them into two heats.
  • Safety:
    • Students need to be mindful of keeping a safe distance from each other to avoid collisions.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • You should grab the handle of the paddle like you are __________.
    • What was the hardest part about learning to block the ball?
