Objective: Strike a lightweight object to a partner

Badminton Unit | Level 7

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to strike a lightweight object to a partner.

IMPORTANCE
Striking a lightweight object to a partner is important because it is the first step in learning how to pass to a partner.

VOCABULARY
Strike
: hit forcibly on purpose.

When striking a lightweight object to a partner, it is important to:

1. Stand sideways to your target with your non-paddle foot forward.

2. Bring the paddle back and hold the ball by your waist.

3. Drop the ball as you swing the paddle.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the beach ball first. One teammate will line up on the baseline and the other on the midline. When I say, “GO!” the first teammate will strike the beach ball with the paddle towards his/her teammate. The opposing teammate must catch the beach ball and then strike it back with his/her paddle.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, decide which volley station you would like to start in – beginner, intermediate or advanced.
  • I will assign you a partner once you have chosen a station.
  • In the beginner station, you will spread out and practice hitting the beach ball to your partner with your paddle.
  • In the intermediate station, you will practice hitting the beach ball to your partner, while staying in the designated hula-hoops.
  • In the advanced station, you will practice hitting the beach ball to your partner, while standing on the designated dots.
  • You can move from one station to the next based on your comfort level.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: Students strike a lightweight object to the teacher to put away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students, this is not a competition – everyone should focus on their own progress.
    • Remind students, if they feel they need an increase or decrease in difficulty that the teacher may place them in a different station.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Which foot should be forward when striking a ball?
    • How could you help your partner be better at striking the ball to you?

  • Runners cannot throw beach balls into the hula-hoops – they must place them in.
  • I will be guarding the hula-hoops.
  • If you get tagged, you must return the beach ball to a swatter and they must try and hit it again.
