Objective: Kick a ball along the ground off the dribble

Soccer Unit | Level 12

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to kick a ball along the ground off the dribble.

IMPORTANCE
Kicking a ball along the ground off a dribble is important because it improves your ability to strike the ball accurately and is necessary when a defender is pressuring you.

VOCABULARY
Ankle:
the joint connecting the foot with the leg.
Top of laces: part of the shoe that is on top of the foot.

When kicking a ball along the ground off the dribble, it is important to:

1.png

1. Place your plant foot next to the ball pointed towards the target.

2.png

2. Lock your ankle and keep your toes down.

3.png

3. Lean forward and strike the middle of the ball with your laces.

PRACTICE

  1. Line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder. Put your ball on the ground in the control position. When I say, “GO!” dribble your ball forward. When I say, “KICK!” kick your ball forward as far as you can. Retrieve your ball, pick it up and bring it back to the baseline.
  2. Repeat as many times as necessary.

KICK OUT

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
2 goals
2 short cones
4 soccer balls

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Kick Out. Your goal is to kick a ball along the ground off the dribble and shoot a goal before the person behind you makes one.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two groups.
  • Before the game begins, line up single file behind your group’s cone.
  • When I say, “GO!” the first person in line will dribble forward and try to shoot on goal.
  • Once the first student has taken a shot, the next student in line can go.
  • If you score a goal before the student behind you, you are safe and rejoin your group at the back of the line.
  • If the student behind you scores before you do, you are eliminated.
  • If you are eliminated, you may practice dribbling around the perimeter of the field or pass with another classmate who is eliminated.
  • We will begin a new game when there is only one student remaining.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: All students begin on the same team. If a student is eliminated, he/she starts another game at the second goal.
Game 3: Each student gets only three seconds to shoot before the student behind him/her can start. Have students count aloud. Increase or decrease this number based on the student’s ability level.
Exit Ticket: Students kick a ball along the ground off the dribble towards the teacher to put away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • When dividing groups, ask students if they would like to go into a ‘beginner’ or ‘advanced’ group. Usually, students will be honest about their ability level and will feel more comfortable playing with other students of the same ability.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • When kicking the ball, you should __________ your ankle and keep your toes __________.
    • Who might you ask to help you practice kicking the ball?

TROLL BRIDGE

Troll Bridge.png

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
1 soccer ball per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Troll Bridge. In this game, you are all billy goats in search of green grass to eat but a troll (tagger) has stopped you from crossing the bridge. Your goal is to help free your fellow billy goats who have been caught by the troll by kicking a ball along the ground off the dribble through the tunnel of the bridge.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select a troll.
  • Before the game begins, spread out in the field with your ball.
  • When I say, “GO!” you may dribble anywhere in the field within the boundary cones.
  • If you are tagged or go out-of-bounds, you must hold your ball over your head and stand in a straddle to form a troll bridge.
  • To become unfrozen another teammate must kick their ball through your troll bridge.
  • We will begin a new round when I select a new troll.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add another troll.
Game 3: Instead of making a troll bridge with both legs, have students form a troll bridge by putting their hands and feet on the ground with space in between.
Game 4: Increase the number of balls that have to go under a troll bridge to make a student unfrozen.
Exit Ticket: Students kick a ball along the ground off the dribble towards the teacher to put away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students to keep their head up while dribbling to avoid bumping into others.

  • Before the game begins, come up with a strategy for your team.
  • Each team must start with all members inside their goal.
  • When I say, “GO!” the ball will be thrown into the field and you will have to work with your team to score on any goal.
  • You must pass at least once to a teammate before scoring.

  • We will begin a new round each time a team has scored a goal.
